Caterpillar Enters Utility Vehicle Market With CUV82 & CUV102D Models
Caterpillar has followed up its previous October-released announcement that the company would enter the utility vehicle market in 2018 with specific details concerning the company’s first models. The new two-seat CUV82 (50 horsepower) and CUV102D (25 horsepower) models both provide 1,000-pound (454-kilogram) total rear cargo and 2,000-pound (907-kilogram) towing capacities, electric power steering, and advanced onboard diagnostics.
Cat developed the UTVs with Textron Specialized Vehicles, a Textron division whose product lines include Cushman, Textron Off Road, Arctic Cat, Jacobsen, and E-Z-GO models of UTVs, side-by-sides, ATVs, snowmobiles, pro turf equipment, and golf carts.
CUV82 & CUV102D Features
Among the various features the CUV82 and CUV102D will include are a four-wheel independent suspension system with a front sway bar, and a long swing-arm suspension and custom-tuned springs and shocks designed to balance hauling duties with a smooth ride. The CUV82 has a 45 mph (72 km/h) operating speed and the CUV102D has a 25 mph (40 km/h) operating speed.
Both models also include a column shifter; a continuously variable transmission tuned specifically for work applications; the choice of two-wheel, four-wheel, or four-wheel drive/lock models; and cabs designed to reduce noise and vibration while in operation.
Adjustable For Driver Comfort
Although both Cat UTV models include the ability to adjust the driver’s seat and steering wheel, as well as remove the passenger seat to increase floor and hauling space, the CUV82 operates on a 0.8L three-cylinder gas engine while the CUV102D runs on a 1.0L three-cylinder diesel engine.
Customization & Accessories Available
Cat has notably pre-wired the UTVs so that owners can install optional customizations if desired. Owners can select among 50 customized accessories overall, including multiple cab options with sealed surfaces, snow plow, heater, front winch, and power dump. Assistance with accessory selection, maintenance questions, and on-site support will come from participating Cat UTV dealers.
