Great Plains Ag Taking Growers “Back To The Basics” With New 12- & 16-Row PL5700 Planters
If you’re a grower looking to get back to the basics and reduce some of the hassles associated with “over-complicated technologies,” Great Plains presents its new 12- and 16-row front-folding PL5700 planters for your consideration. The company says the planters are designed for those seeking “precision in the field” and “top-of-the-line planter accuracy” provided in a straightforward approach. Great Plains Engineering Vice President Rye DeGarmo says his company developed the planters for 30-inch (76.2-centimeter) rows in order to create more opportunities “to reach the Corn Belt.”
The Desired Necessities
In addition to planters, Great Plains manufactures vertical and convention tillage equipment, fertilizer applicators, compact drills, rotary cutters, and other ag equipment. With the PL5700 planters, Great Plains provides options for 50-bushel bulk tanks, 1.6-bushel hoppers, or new 3-bushel individual hoppers. DeGarmo says the 3-bushel hoppers are designed to reduce transport width to 12 feet (3.7 meters) wide, which “allows us to deliver these planters from the factory to the dealer with very little dealer setup.”
The planters also provide IRC (individual row control), hydraulic, or ground drive options, as well as ISO-6 electronics that involve six control loops enabling the planter to operate on six different controls. “In addition to these new electronics, the planter has electric drive, variable rate, turn compensation, and prescription-mapping capabilities, giving producers the basic necessities they desire, while avoiding the hassle of complex technology,” he says.
At The Heart
Great Plains says the heart of the PL5700 planters is a new 5000 Series Air-Pro meter, a “simple, positive air pressure meter” that includes a 66% larger seed pool and 92% larger seed inlet opening “so the meter stays full at higher speeds.” Besides enabling what Great Plains says is the “highest level of singulation on the market today,” the 5000 Series Air-Pro features ductile cast parallel arms for “long-term row-unit stability” and a telescoping tongue and locking wings for easier transportation and overall maneuverability.
