Dual Fuel Retrofit Kit For 785C Mining Truck Coming From CAT
Caterpillar has announced it will begin making its Dynamic Gas Blending (DGB) technology available in the company’s 785C Mining Truck beginning in January via a duel fuel dynamic gas blending retrofit kit. Made available through the company’s global CAT dealer network, the offering marks the first DGB system that Caterpillar has offered for a mining machine. DGB technology enables engines to operate on both diesel and LNG (liquefied natural gas) while lowering fuel costs but while maintaining diesel power and transient performance.
Steve Igoe, commercial manager of Caterpillar’s Gas Engine Business, stated that Caterpillar validated the retrofit kit for the 785C Mining Truck recently with the results proving “excellent.” The kit enables customers to “reduce fuel costs significantly” via the use of LNG, Igoe said in a press release. “Natural gas and LNG offer both economic and environmental benefits to the mining industry.”
Caterpillar plans to add additional DGB systems in the future. Used in the oil and gas industry since 2013, the retrofit kit “offers a peak substitution of up to 85% of diesel with natural gas and gets the same performance, reliability, and payload as a diesel truck,” stated Igoe. Customers, he added, can expect 20 to 40% savings related to fuel costs, which potentially could translate to “millions of dollars each year for a large mine,” Igoe aid.
