Caterpillar Hands Off Keys To Its 50,000th Articulated Truck
Trader Construction Company of New Bern, North Carolina, recently had the honor of receiving the 50,000th Cat articulated truck at Caterpillar's Peterlee manufacturing plant in the United Kingdom. Caterpillar started producing its line of articulated trucks in 1985, and the Cat 745 45.2-ton model delivered to Trader during a ceremony at the plant represents a major milestone for the company.
“The articulated truck has been a key member of Caterpillar’s core product line since it was developed in Peterlee, which has always been its proud home,” says Brent Losey, Caterpillar product manager for articulated trucks. “I thank the entire team for their focus and dedication to continually improve the design, manufacture, and support of these great trucks for our customers. Cat articulated trucks are helping our customers meet their objectives on construction and mine sites around the world. We are proud to see the 50,000th truck drive off the assembly line and look forward to the next 50,000!”
Cat 745
Introduced early last year, Caterpillar’s 745 articulated truck is packed with refinements that make the in-cab experience better. The truck provides drivers with vastly improved visibility and ambient noise levels; Caterpillar has compared noise inside the cab to “driving a mid-size sedan.” Ease of use is a big factor, as well: Operators control the truck’s speed and body hoist with a single lever. On the performance side, the Cat 745 sports a C18 ACERT engine that produces up to 504 horsepower (376 kilowatts) and offers an economy operation mode that improves fuel efficiency by around five percent. The Cat 745 has a wealth of standard technology features, including Cat Production Management, Product Link, and Cat Detect with Stability Assist.
Another Link In The Chain
Caterpillar’s line of articulated trucks began with the D400 40-ton (36-tonne) model back in 1985. Today, the company offers six models, all in three-axle configurations, with capacities ranging from 19.6 cubic yards up to 32.7 cubic yards and payload ratings from 26.5 tons up to 45.2 tons.
