Cat Introduces The 740 GC Articulated Dump Truck
Caterpillar just launched its 740 GC Articulated Dump Truck. This 40-ton-capacity machine sports a slew of Cat’s latest features, such as new controls, a hoist-assist system, an advanced traction-control system, a stability-assist system, and an optional ECO mode that dramatically reduces fuel consumption.
Under The Hood
There are two versions of the Cat 740 GC and both feature a C15 ACERT engine. One configuration, however, is designed for highly regulated countries (HRCs) such as North America, Europe, and Japan, and the other for less regulated countries (LRCs), with regards to emissions regulations. The HRC variant of the 740 GC comes with a 452-horsepower engine and the LRC model ships with a 449-horsepower engine. They both have a Cat CX38B transmission and a 6 x 6 drive configuration.
Cat designed the 740 GC with a cab that’s more comfortable to work in, with an interior sound level limited to 72 dB(A). Other features of the cab include Cat’s exclusive external spinal-ROPS and a design change that removed a structural pillar from the rear of the cab to offer the operator a better view to the rear of the vehicle. Cat also redesigned the door, making it lighter and more rigid, and improving the door seal to better prevent dust from entering the cab.
All The Latest Tech
The Cat 740 GC articulated dump truck has an automatic retarder-control system designed to improve the operating efficiency of the machine without manual input. Other cutting-edge features include a wait-brake function that engages the service brakes when the machine is idle, a hill-start system that prevents roll-back when the operator moves from the brakes to the throttle while on a sloped surface, optional infrared glass that prevents the cab interior from heating due to direct exposure to sunlight, and sliding windows on both sides of the machine to supply the operator with fresh air as needed. Operators are also likely to appreciate the combined transmission-and-hoist lever, which makes gear selection and body-hoisting easier to manage from single-lever controls. The operator can also choose manual or assisted-hoisting with the flip of a switch.
