JLG Celebrates Production Of 250,000th Self-Propelled Boom Lift In North America

North American boom lift manufacturer JLG recently manufactured its 250,000th self-propelled boom lift, which it delivered to New York-based Skyworks, the same company that received JLG’s 100,000th boom lift and telehandler. (Photo courtesy of JLG.)

Producing a quarter million units of any product is reason enough to celebrate, and that’s exactly what JLG did in mid-October when the company manufactured its 250,000th self-propelled boom lift in North America. JLG, an Oshkosh company based in McConnellsburg, Pennsylvania, built the lift, a 65.8-foot (20-meter) 660SJ model, at its manufacturing facility in Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. JLG, which takes credit for having produced the world’s first boom lift roughly 50 years ago, is a leading global producer of electric and engine-powered articulating and telescopic aerial work platforms and telehandlers.

    Achieving Milestones

Making history in this way isn’t new for JLG. Now approaching the 50th anniversary of its founding, the company had just 20 employees when it produced its first lift. Since then, JLG is credited with introducing the first oscillating axle technology in 1981, manufacturing the first fuel cell-powered boom lift in 1999, and producing the world’s largest self-propelled lift in 2014 with the 185.7-foot (56.6-meter) 1850SJ.

Skyworks of Buffalo, New York, took delivery of both the 250,000th commemorative boom lift and the 100,000th JLG-manufactured boom lift. Skyworks had also taken delivery of JLG’s 100,000th telehandler in 2015. Bill Dovey, JLG product manager of boom lifts, says JLG’s relationship with Skyworks traces to Skyworks’ founding. “It’s a relationship we value, not only for the business it brings to us, but also for the opportunities it presents to celebrate together as we reach important milestones like this one,” he says.

Founded in 1969, Oshkosh-based JLG recently produced its 250,000th self-propelled boom lift, a 65.8-foot 660SJ. The company produced the lift at its manufacturing facility in Shippenburg, Pennsylvania. (Photo courtesy of JLG.)
    Extending Tradition

Jerry Reinhart, Jr., Skyworks founder and president, is the son of Jerry Reinhart, Sr., who founded Access Rentals in 1974 and purchased a commemorative lift from JLG in 1976 to mark America’s bicentennial. Reinhart, Jr., said, as a family-owned business whose partnership with JLG spans three generations, the 250,000th lift “underscores our commitment to JLG and the company’s commitment to us and the rental industry.”
