PT Putra Tongga Samudra, an Indonesian mining company, uses Terex Trucks' TA400 articulated dump trucks to mine tin in Pemali Sungailiat on Bangka Island. The company bought three TA400 trucks tin 2010 and they helped mine 282 tons (256 metric tons) of tin. Today, the operation has mined a total of 6,173 tons (5,600 metric tons) of tin and has dug down to a depth of 361 feet (110 meters). PT Putra Tongga Samudra’s fleet grew alongside its mining efforts, and now the company owns 27 TA400s.

“The first factor we considered before buying the articulated haulers was pricing. Second was the ease of operation. Thirdly, we evaluated how well they could operate during the rainy season,” says Fondy Hidajat, Director of Operations at PT Putra Tongga Samudra. “We will continue to purchase more articulated haulers to maintain optimal performance of production as long as the price of tin is still feasible for us to mine.”

    Reliable Support

PT Putra Tongga Samudra purchased all of its TA400 trucks from PT United Equipment Indonesia, and that dealer handles all of the ongoing maintenance for the vehicles as well. The company has been using its Terex vehicles to move overburden, with some models putting in as much as 20,000 hours of work. Fortunately, TA400s are built to work in demanding conditions, and PT Putra Tongga Samudra has a strong relationship with its dealer that ensures “the ready availability of new units,” Fondy adds.

    Terex TA400

The Terex TA400 articulated dump truck sports an Allison HD4560 fully automatic transmission and a Scania DC13 six-cylinder engine that produces up to 444 horsepower and 1,663 pounds foot (2,255 newton-meters) of torque. It supports a maximum payload of 41.9 tons (38 metric tons) and a heaped capacity of 30.3 cubic yards (23.3 cubic meters). The TA400, which is manufactured in Motherwell, Scotland, also features a transmission retarder and oil-cooled multidisc brakes for operating on steep inclines.
