Caterpillar’s big 797F Mining Truck now comes in a Tier 4 Final emissions standards-compliant configuration. In order to meet that lofty goal, its enormous 20-cylinder engine makes use of SCR (selective catalytic reduction) and DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) in its modular exhaust aftertreatment system, which uses less than 11% new content, the company says.

    Tried & Tested

Cat says that it has tested production models of the new 797F Tier 4 Final for more than 100,000 hours to make sure it reduces oxides of nitrogen to below target levels. The company ran field evaluations on the low-emissions truck in oil sands, deep pit copper, iron ore, and coal site applications. It also evaluated the new configuration at extreme temperatures and at altitudes higher than 16,000 feet (4,877 meters) above sea level.

Cat says that the new 797F Tier 4 Final’s fuel and DEF savings are significant in terms of lower operating costs, longer engine life, and lower repair costs. (Photo courtesy of Caterpillar.)
    Big Numbers

Nominally, the Cat 797F has a massive payload capacity of 400 tons (363 metric tons) and a gross machine weight of 687.5 tons (623,690 kilograms). It boasts a 350 cubic yards (268 cubic meters) heaped capacity and can carry up to 290 cubic yards (222 cubic meters) struck.

Powering the giant mining truck is the 6,407-cubic inch (105-liter) Cat C175-20 quad turbo diesel engine, which also sees use in large generator sets. The air-to-air aftercooled motor produces 4,000 gross horsepower (2,983 kilowatts) and propels the truck through a seven-speed transmission.

Cat says that the 797F is the best-selling truck in its size class. The new Tier 4 Final version uses less fuel and DEF than earlier Tier 2 models in most cases, the company says.
