Vermeer’s Safe & Speedy New SC70TX Stump Cutter
Vermeer has added a new professional-grade tool to its tree care product portfolio.
“Vermeer designed the SC70TX stump cutter for challenging residential, commercial, municipal, and rental applications,” says Vermeer tree care, rental, and landscaping sales manager Todd Roorda. “We have made several enhancements . . . to create a powerful and efficient machine. We know contractors will be pleased with the power, speed, and controls of the SC70TX model.”
Cutting Power
The new 67-horsepower (50-kilowatt) stump cutter gets its power from a turbocharged Cat C2.2 diesel engine. The motor turns out 153 pounds-foot (207.4 newton meters) of torque and complies with Tier 4 Final/Stage IIIB emissions standards.
A gearbox drive system directs the engine’s power to the 23-inch (58.4-centimeter) cutter wheel. The wheel spins at 880 rpm and has 30 Vermeer Yellow Jacket serviceable teeth. The SC70TX can cut stumps from 27 inches (68.6 centimeters) above ground level to 16 inches (40.6 centimeters) below.
A major safety measure on the new stump cutter is a set of capacitance-sensing control handles. When you let go of the handles, the system automatically stops the cutting wheel from turning. There’s an optional LCD remote, however, that allows you to operate the cutter from your preferred vantage point.
Sweep & Transport Speeds
To reduce wear and tear and decrease engine stress, Vermeer endowed the SC70TX with its patented SmartSweep control system. SmartSweep automatically adjusts the cutter wheel sweep rate to keep the engine speed in its optimal power band.
Vermeer also made the SC70TX a fast mover between tree stumps. It can roll at up to 1.6 mph (2.6 km/h) on its 9-inch (229-millimeter) rubber iron-core tracks. The tracks have a tread design intended to minimize turf damage while turning, the company says. Also, thanks to its tracks and undercarriage, the 3,900-pound (1,769-kilogram) stump cutter exerts only 4.3 pounds per square inch of ground-bearing pressure.
