Genie Boom Lifts, Telehandlers Get Positive Air Shutdown System For Flammable Environments

    Posted On: April 3, 2019

Deutz Tier 4 Final-engined Genie boom lifts and telehandlers, like the GTH-844 above, now have a factory option to shut themselves off if flammable vapors cause the engine to race. (Photo courtesy of Genie.)

Genie is now offering a new positive air shutdown system as a factory option on its boom lifts and telescopic forklifts equipped with Tier 4F Deutz diesel engines. The new safe-use option makes the equipment “rental-ready,” the company says, for applications that involve flammable gases, dust, and other material.

The shutdown system will turn off a Genie boom lift or telehandler when it detects the engine starting to race in a runaway event, such as in an indoor factory or in an oil, gas, or mining site.

    Diesel Engine Runaway

“This scenario occurs when combustible gas, dust, or vapor is sucked into a diesel engine’s air intake, causing the engine RPM to speed out of control,” says Terex AWP’s Genie Product Manager, Sean Larin. “In sensitive environments like oil refineries, diesel engine runaway may result in engine and other damage.”

Genie says it designed the new system for more uptime than aftermarket alternatives with a long-life motor and a sealed butterfly valve. It has a push-button valve test feature, and it’s covered by the company’s support and warranty. Genie plans to release it as a retrofit kit later on.

    The Deutz Connection

The Deutz engines mentioned above in Genie machines are able to comply with Tier 4 Final emissions requirements with little or no need for exhaust aftertreatment system maintenance.

And because so many Genie products come with Deutz engines, Deutz Power Centers are now authorized service and parts centers for Genie booms, scissor lifts, and telehandlers.
