Komatsu has announced new, Tier 4 Final-compliant mining excavators in the large PC1250 series. The PC1250SP-11 is a short undercarriage variant on the platform, while the PC1250LC-11 offers a longer undercarriage and additional arm options.

The main takeaways from the new models are: up to 13% more horsepower and up to 8% more productivity over their PC1250-8 series forerunners; more operator comfort and safety enhancements; and no DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) or SCR (selective catalytic reduction) systems.

The manufacturer says the PC1250 mining series is optimized for loading 50- to 70-ton (45- to 63.5-metric ton) class, rigid frame trucks.

“The PC1250 offers exceptional customer value across a broad range of applications, including sewer and water, general construction, and mass excavation, as well as mining, quarry, sand, and gravel,” said Kurt Moncini, Sr., tracked equipment product manager for Komatsu America.

    Common Mechanical Features

The two new excavator models’ differences are visually apparent, yet they share many of the same traits.

Both are powered by a Komatsu 23.15-liter SAA6D170E-6 VGT (Variable Geometry Turbocharged) diesel engine that produces 758 net horsepower (565 kilowatts), a 13% improvement. The motor employs two DPFs (diesel particulate filters), which are covered by a Komatsu exchange program at 4,500 hours within the first five years.

The excavators are fully hydrostatically driven. An auto-shift 2-speed transmission yields a top speed of 2 mph (3.3 km/h). Adjustable Auto Idle Shutdown modes turn off the engine after a designated amount of idle time.

These PC1250s come with a new Power Plus (P+) hydraulic operating mode that adds force but doesn’t require more fuel, Komatsu says. A Lift Mode supplies up to 10% more hydraulic pressure and enables fine control while handling objects.

The boom has a slow return valve and a boom float feature to reduce shocks. A Smooth mode reduces the boom’s downward power to facilitate hammer and floor clearing operations. The Power mode, meanwhile, disables the boom float feature to increase digging strength.

    Comfort & Safety

Among other qualities shared between the new PC1250SP-11 and PC1250LC-11 is a bigger, more comfort-oriented cab. The pressurized cab is 3.5 inches (90 millimeters) wider than before and quieter by 2 dB(A).

There are new adjustable armrests on the high-back and heated air suspension seat. Also new is the user interface on the 7-inch (178-millimeter) LCD display.

To the left is a sliding side window; above, a sunroof with a shade. An optional amenity is a hydraulically powered ladder to ease entry and exit.

On the safety front, the KomVision four-camera system comes standard to provide the operator with visibility all around the machine. The excavator’s battery has a master disconnect switch with a lock out/tag out feature for times when maintenance is required. Furthermore, the boom and arm both have new tie-off points where a service technician can attach a safety harness.

Purchase of a new PC1250SP-11 or PC1250LC-11 includes 2,000 hours or three years of complimentary Komatsu CARE scheduled factory maintenance on the engine, along with a 50-point inspection at regular service intervals during that period. Both models support Komtrax and Komtrax Plus telematics.

    PC1250SP-11

The PC1250SP-11 has the shorter undercarriage and reach of the two new excavators. It applies more digging force for applications such as high volume stripping and mass excavation.

This “SP” machine can use a larger bucket than its “LC” brother, with a 4.1- to 11.9-cubic yard (3.1- to 9.1-cubic meter) bucket capacity. Its boom measures 25 feet 7 inches (7.8 meters), and its arm is 11 feet 2 inches (3.4 meters) in length. Operating weight for the PC1250SP-11 ranges between roughly 260,500 and 266,000 pounds (118,000 and 121,000 kilograms).

    PC1250LC-11

The LC, or long carriage, edition of the new PC1250 is a versatile machine with a stable operating platform and three arm options. There are long and medium arms for pipeline jobs and large utility projects where increased digging depth and reach are needed. Also available is a short arm option for general construction and high-volume earthmoving with a larger bucket of 5.3 to 9.5 cubic yards (4.1 to 7.3 cubic meters).

The larger, longer undercarriage of the PC1250LC-11 provides a relatively lower ground pressure. Operating weight is approximately 270,000 to 272,500 pounds (122,500 to 123,500 kilograms).
