Kobelco Announces A New 90-Ton Class Crawler Excavator, The SK850LC-10

Kobelco has debuted a new, improved crawler excavator dubbed the SK850LC-10. With an operating weight of 185,700 pounds (84,232 kilograms), the big earthmoving machine is the biggest Generation 10 excavator the company has yet released.

Kobelco touts the new model’s power, fuel economy, comfort, and durability.

Impressive Performance

The 90-ton (81.6-metric-ton) class Gen 10 edition of the SK850LC features a maximum digging reach of 47 feet, 10 inches (14.6 meters) and a max digging depth of 31 feet, 10 inches (9.7 meters). Its bucket options cover a lot of usage scenarios with a wide range of 1.78 to 8.50 cubic yards (1.36 to 6.5 cubic meters). The big Kobelco has a dynamic digging force of 90,598 pounds (403 kilonewtons) and a 146,800-pound (653-kilonewton) drawbar pull force.

All that power comes from a stout, 510-horsepower (380-kilowatt), six-cylinder Hino engine that’s compliant with Tier IV Final emissions standards. In its eco mode, the SK850LC-10 gets up to 17% better fuel efficiency than its Generation 9 predecessor. The company says that a better hydraulic line layout that avoids energy-robbing turbulence and valve restrictions helps the cause.

The engine uses a raft of methods to achieve its efficiency and emissions targets: water-cooled EGR (exhaust gas recirculation), a VGT (variable-geometry turbocharger), SCR (selective catalytic reduction), a DPF (diesel particulate filter), and DEF (diesel exhaust fluid). The Hino motor also has an automatic shutdown feature after an adjustable period of idling inactivity.

In The Cab

Kobelco worked on making the Gen 10 excavator easier to operate and service. Its cockpit lever control requires 25% less effort to use, reducing user fatigue over the course of the workday.

Meanwhile, the cab has more space in its interior, as well as new climate control vents behind the seat for all-around operator comfort. The machine’s physical service points and digital maintenance data are both easy to access, the manufacturer says.

Standard features of the new SK850LC-10 include a FOPS top guard, a rear-view camera, and swing flashers, as well as support for Kobelco’s KOMEXS cell-based telemetry. Other new features include a right-hand camera option, an air suspension seat, sensors to detect restriction in the hydraulic fluid filter, and a new cover to keep debris from falling in during a filter change.
