Cat 794 AC Mining Truck Now Meets Tier 4 Final Standards
Caterpillar has announced that its 794 AC mining truck has achieved Tier 4 Final emissions standards compliance as set out by the U.S. EPA. The company says that the Tier 4 edition of the machine offers the same performance and productivity as its Tier 2 equivalent, while burning up to 5.6% less fuel.
Cat is re-using a proven exhaust aftertreatment solution for the 794 AC’s emission mitigation platform. The SCR (selective catalytic reduction) system uses DEF (diesel exhaust fluid) to cut emissions of nitrogen oxides.
“Caterpillar selected the SCR solution,” the company says, “because it provides the most robust and reliable Tier 4 Final emissions compliance without sacrificing engine performance.”
The emissions platform has logged more than 20 million hours in the field, Cat says. Its service interval is the same as the truck’s preventive maintenance schedule to avoid unnecessary downtime.
Haul It All
The 794 AC is a large, 575-ton (522-metric-ton) electric-drive truck with a nominal payload capacity of 320 tons (290 metric tons). It gets its enormous power from Cat’s 16-cylinder, 5,187-liter C175-16 diesel engine, which churns out 3,500 horsepower (2,610 kilowatts).
The 794 AC uses AC induction motors to drive its rear wheels, resulting in travel speeds of up to 37 mph (60 km/h). It brakes with wet disc systems front and rear. The in-cab sound pressure level is rated at 75 dB(A).
On To The EU
Caterpillar is using the same aftertreatment configuration to apply for EU Stage V certification for the 794 AC.
