Collect Larger, Tighter Bunches With New John Deere Felling Heads
With designs that draw heavily on customer feedback, John Deere’s FS50 and FR50 felling heads offer increased accumulating capacities, an improved range of motion, and better visibility than previous models. Deere says that the new felling heads feature “a taller horn that works together with the pocket and arms to collect larger, tighter bunches.” The taller horn also helps Deere’s tracked feller bunches (the new heads are compatible with 800M- and 900M-series models) to better handle tall trees.
Rotating Wrist Heads
The FS50 and FR50 feature 30-degree and 310-degree wrist configurations, respectively. Deere rates the FS50 for up to 7,430 pounds (3,370 kilograms) and the FR50 for up to 8,070 pounds (3,660 kilograms). Cutting capacity and accumulation capacity are identical on both models—supporting up to 20 inches (508 millimeters) and 6.9 square feet (0.64 square meters), respectively. The configurations help to maximize the heads’ versatility. “I always try to work more efficient, smarter, and more precise,” says Thomas Johnson of Thomas Johnson Logging. “Nothing else on the market holds the timber that this one holds.”
Wear Protection
Both models include arm cylinders mounted high, which Deere says improves wear protection on the saw housing, and can hold up to 15 six-inch trees. Deere offers a full coverage housing for both the FS50 and FR50, and with the latter, customers can also opt for sealed bushings in all clamp arm pivot joints.
