Caterpillar announced a variety of enhancements for its PM620, PM622, PM820, PM822, and PM825 half-lane cold planers. The machines are designed to perform full-depth removal of asphalt and concrete pavements in a single pass, the company says.

    New Features

Cat outfitted the cold planers with a new engine that meets Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions requirements. The 6-cylinder Cat C18 turbodiesel’s aftertreatment system uses multi-piece cartridge filters. The PM800 Series models also get a power boost to 800.6 horsepower, while the PM600 units are rated at 630 horsepower.

The planers also get new pivoting handrails that stow on the right side of the machine. New markings on top of the side plates help the operator gauge the position of the rotor for more accurate jumps over obstacles.

Track pin updates increase tractive force for when the going gets tough. Meanwhile, new wear surfaces reduce maintenance requirements on the side plates and anti-slab assembly. The planers can use Cat System K milling rotors with either carbide or diamond bits. The latter can last up to 80 times longer, Cat says, and improve fuel efficiency by reducing drag while cutting. Available spacings include 0.3, 0.6, and 0.7 inches (8, 15, and 18 millimeters).

    Widths & Weights

The Cat PM620 has a milling width of 79.1 inches (2 meters) and an operating weight of 73,260 pounds (33,230 kilograms). Its bigger sibling, the PM622, has a milling width of 88 inches (2.2 meters) and weighs 74,580 pounds (33,829 kilograms).

In the larger PM800 Series, milling widths range from 79.1 inches for the PM820 to 98.6 inches (2.5 meters) for the PM825, with the PM822 falling in between at 88 inches. The PM820 weighs 79,630 pounds (36,120 kilograms); the PM822, 80,887 pounds (36,690 kilograms); and the PM825, 82,650 pounds (37,489 kilograms). The integrated Cat Grade Control system is an option for all of the above. Cat also sells smaller cold planers with wheel or track undercarriages.
