New John Deere 959ML Shovel Logger Purpose-Built For Steep-Slope Logging Market

John Deere has announced a new 959ML Shovel Logger for felling and log handling applications in difficult terrain. Available in shovel logger and directional feller configurations from the factory, the 959ML comes in direct response to the continued growth the steep-slope logging market is experiencing, Deere says. Among other features, the 959ML Shovel Logger features a 9-liter John Deere Tier 4 Final PowerTech Plus 6090PSS engine providing 330 horsepower (246-kilowatt) peak power and 1,027 pounds-foot (1,392 newton meters) of torque.

“Excellent” Capability

Jim O’Halloran, Deere Construction & Forestry global product marketing manager, says as loggers continue migrating to steeper terrain for operations, Deere’s aim is to offer solutions specifically designed for the demands and unpredictable conditions that such terrain throws at them. To do so, the 959ML takes various features from Deere’s M and MH Series models, including a “best-in-class” leveling control system. Based on sensor technology, the system maximizes the machine’s forward tilt angle (26 degrees forward) while also “electronically preventing any possible mechanical interference when tilting to the side.” In addition to leveling envelope boundaries being automatically set, the system “provides a smooth transition when approaching the leveling limits,” Deere says.

Buyers of the shovel logger configuration can expect a 36-foot (11-meter) live heel shovel logger boom, while those choosing a directional feller configuration can expect 30-foot (9.1-meter) and 34-foot (10.4-meter) directional feller booms designed for steep-slope duties. Even at full leveler tilt, Deere says each boom option provides “excellent downhill reach capability.” The shovel logger boom can accept up to 5-foot (1.5-meter) grapples or mid-sized directional felling heads, and Deere offers an option to quickly transition between the two attachments. The manufacturer notes that the directional feller booms are “specifically designed to support any large directional felling head applications.”

959ML buyers can equip the machine with various optional add-ons Deere designed for steep-slope applications, including a weld-on and tether-ready hitch field kit, slope indicator, and four-point seat harness. Elsewhere, the cab features an upward-viewing skylight and downward-viewing window, while walkways, open enclosures, and walkthrough access make performing service and maintenance chores easier.
