New Brunswick Construction Company Expands Its Fleet Of Grove Cranes
Irving Equipment of Saint John, New Brunswick, Canada, has added a pair of Grove cranes to its fleet in order to do two-hook operations and compete for new types of jobs. The new models are a 300-ton (250-metric ton) GMK5250L all-terrain crane and a 115-ton (100-metric ton) TMS9000-2 telescopic boom truck crane.
“We are now better equipped to provide the best lifting solution for our clients,” says Irving Operations Manager Victor Murty. “Now we have even more lifting options. This will help us compete for and win jobs we couldn’t have previously.”
Shawmut Equipment of Elmsdale, Nova Scotia, sold Irving the new Grove cranes. About 60% of the construction company’s fleet are from Manitowoc brands such as Grove. Irving has been a Manitowoc customer for more than 60 years, the manufacturer says.
The Grove GMK5250L
Grove claims that the GMK5250L has the best reach and strongest load chart of any five-axle crane. It uses a 230-foot (70-meter), seven-section main boom and a 69-foot (21.3-meter) jib to attain a maximum tip height of 361 feet (110 meters). Its swingaway can reach 121 feet (37 meters) and can be offset up to 50 degrees.
The manufacturer says the GMK5250L has a rapid setup time. Its off-road capability is enhanced by its Megatrak suspension, which increases real ground clearance rather than merely lifting the chassis, the company says. Grove uses a wear-free Voith VIAB integrated turbo retarder clutch to improve the GMK5250L’s roadability. VIAB helps the crane start rolling or come to a stop on grades. It also reduces fuel consumption and wear on the brake pads and friction clutches. A turbo coupling module gets rid of excess heat.
“The GMK5250L is a one-engine crane and employs the Maxbase multiple position outrigger system,” Murty says. “With one engine we cut down on maintenance, and the Maxbase technology enables us to better position the crane around jobsites.” Maxbase also helps the GMK5250L work in limited spaces and lift heavier loads with the boom at a shorter radius.
The Grove TMS9000-2
Grove’s four-axle TMS9000-2 truck crane has a six-section greaseless Megaform main boom that can extend from 36 to 169 feet (11.2 to 51.6 meters). Various bi-fold swingaway options and a 56.9-foot (17.3-meter) boom extension assist the crane in reaching a maximum tip height of 263.4 feet (79.3 meters). The 97,000-pound (44,000-kilogram) Grove crane features a hydraulic removal system for up to 48,500 pounds (22,000 kilograms) of counterweight, which adds lifting capacity as more weight is added.
Inside the TMS9000-2’s 20-degree hydraulically tilting cab is Manitowoc’s Crane Control System, or CCS. Also aiding user operation is a wireless rigging remote that can be used outside the cab for maximum visibility. Along with other feedback on the cranes, Irving Equipment shares machine data with Manitowoc regarding the TMS9000-2’s fuel consumption and the GMK5250L’s efficiency.
“The TMS9000-2 has an automatic truck transmission, which enables us to report about its fuel usage in comparison with our other machines,” Murty says.
