Doosan Infracore North America’s crawler excavator lineup has a new member in the Doosan DX170LC-5. If you’re a small to midsized contractor routinely performing light excavation tasks (think digging residential basements or landscaping projects), you’ll want to check it out, as Doosan says the 127.3-horsepower excavator’s combined weight with a trailer and Class 7 tow vehicle should easily come in below the 80,000-pound (36,287-kilogram) GVWR (gross vehicle weight rating) limit.

(Although the DX170LC-5 reduces the need to obtain a special transport permit to move it among jobsites, Doosan cautions owners to refer to federal, state, and local regulations before transporting it across public roadways.)

    The Right Size

In designing the DX170LC-5, Doosan set out to offer customers a model whose size falls between the smaller 109.4-horsepower Doosan DX140LC-5 and DX140LCR-5 models and the larger 127.3-horsepower DX180LC-5.

“We felt it was very important to offer a model in this size class to ensure our excavating customers could minimize transportation costs while retaining the performance they expect from Doosan excavators,” says Doosan Marketing Manager Aaron Kleingartner. Providing 391 pounds-foot (530 newton meters) of maximum net torque at 1,400 rpm, the DX170LC-5 has a 38,376-pound (17,407-kilogram) operating weight, 16.73-foot (5-meter) standard boom length, 19.92-foot (6-meter) dig depth, 28.8-foot (8.8-meter) digging reach, and 8-foot (2.4-meter) maximum loading height.

    Included & Optional

Doosan says the DX170LC-5 meets Tier 4 emissions standards via a modified diesel engine and various aftertreatment technologies. Elsewhere, four power modes—Power+, Power, Standard, and Economy—are available to better match fuel consumption and power to work conditions. Further, four work modes—Digging, Breaker, Shear, and Lifting—are selectable via a dial switch. A rearview camera, 7-inch LCD, and three-year standard subscription to the DoosanCONNECT telematics system are also included. Factory-installed options include a side-view camera, straight-traveling pedal, two-way auxiliary hydraulic pedal, intelligent floating boom, and rotating beacon.
