Set for debut at CONEXPO-CON/AGG, Volvo Construction Equipment’s new 8-foot asphalt pavers fill a market niche for contractors. “The P5110B and P5170B give contractors a new heavy 8-foot size class option, meeting demand for mid-size pavers that fall between our existing P4410B and 7000B series models,” says Bill Laing, product manager, road products at Volvo CE. The P5110B is a tracked machine and the P5170B is a wheeled paver, and both models come with an UltiMat160 screed that can extend paving width hydraulically from 8 feet up to 16 feet.

    Performance Features

Volvo installs the same engine—a Volvo D6 Tier 4 Final model with 173 horsepower (129 kilowatts)—in the 5000B series pavers that the company uses in its L60H to L90H wheel loaders to deliver performance and productivity. “We also integrated adaptive Volvo engine speed technology into the 5000 series to give high productivity at a very low 1,200 rpm,” notes Laing. “This results in lower operating costs day in, day out.” Volvo optimizes the D6 Tier 4 Final engine’s speed, torque, and fuel consumption to deliver the best performance and fuel efficiency, averaging 3.7 gallons per hour for the 5110B and 3.3 gallons per hour for the 5170B.

    Continuous, High-Quality Paving

The 5000B series features a variety of conveniences that also help improve contractor productivity. The large-capacity hopper, for example, supports up to 6.4 cubic meters of material, and Volvo designs the paver with rolled wings to prevent material build-up and reduce cleaning time. Sonic sensors let operators regulate material delivery, and the screed’s front-mounted extension supports head-of-material control in the auger channel for a high-quality finish. Both models are backed by the Volvo Lifetime Frame And Structure Warranty.
