Potain MDT 809 Topless Tower Crane Expanding Swedish Hospital
Swedish contractor ByggDialog is using a 27.6-ton (25-metric-ton) version of Potain’s big MDT 809 topless tower crane on a hospital project not far from Gothenburg. The Skaraborg hospital in Skövde is undergoing an expansion, and the MDT 809 has been on site since October 2019 pitching in to help. Set up with a 180-foot (55-meter) jib and 123 ft (37.5 m) of height under hook, the big Potain is assisting with the building’s concrete structure.
“This is a challenging project that involves lifting heavy elements over long distances,” says Jan Heed, the managing director of local Potain distributor Lambertsson Kran. “With its large capacity, we knew the MDT 809 was the crane for our customer.”
Fast Setup
Potain says that the MDT 809 is transportable in just 10 to 11 containers rather than the more typical 14 to 15 for a similarly sized crane. On the job site, the crane can be raised to a working height of 164 ft (50 m) in less than three days—twice as fast as other cranes with its capabilities, the manufacturer says. The MDT 809 has several features to speed up its commissioning process, including dedicated slinging points and the option to assemble the jib sections in the air or on the ground. In addition, the safety devices can be set up from within the cab using the display screen. The crane’s topless design provides more clearance between tower cranes on job sites with multiple units, according to the manufacturer.
Potain says it builds the MDT 809 to offer “the high-capacity lifting performance you expect from a hammerhead tower crane and the reduced operating costs of a topless crane.” The 27.6-t edition can operate at heights up to 214 ft (65 m) with a maximum tip capacity of 9.1 tons (8.3 metric tons) at its full 262-ft (80-m) reach. Various winch options can imbue the MDT 809 with 35.3 and 44.1 tons of lift capacity for more demanding jobs.
