Caterpillar Launches New Cat 140 GC Motor Grader Designed For Maximum Productivity & Lower Operating Costs

Caterpillar recently introduced the new 140 GC motor grader, which it says offers “high performance with low owning and operating costs.” The 140 GC features a 196-horsepower (146-kilowatt) Cat C7.1 engine and an automatic power-shift transmission, without an inching pedal, with six forward and three reverse gears. There are four versions available, including Tier 4 and Stage V models with or without all-wheel drive. Depending on the model, the weight of Cat’s newest motor grader ranges from 38,912 to 42,119 pounds (17,650 to 19,105 kilograms). The Cat 140 GC’s moldboard width is 12 feet (3,658 millimeters).

Standard Features

Cat says that the 140 GC's steering wheel and lever controls are the result of 45 years of refinement, making them familiar to operators and easier to use. The adjustable control console ensures everything is within the operator’s reach. The hydraulic system and no-spin differential ensure that the machine is well-balanced, even on uneven terrain, while providing maximum drawbar power to the ground, the company says. The drawbar circle moldboard features replaceable wear strips to extend its service life. The Cat 140 GC also has oil-bath, multi-disc, hydraulically actuated service brakes and an ECO operating mode, both of which reduce operating costs, according to Caterpillar.

Compatible Attachments & Optional Features

The Cat 140 GC is compatible with a wide range of attachments, including front blades, rippers, and scarifiers. It is also available with optional features for improving performance and durability, including a secondary steering system, all-wheel drive, a 14-ft (4.3-m) moldboard, a Digital Blade Slope Meter, Cat Detect with Vision System, a Circle-drive slip clutch, extra guarding, and a Circle Saver option that reduces “daily greasing requirements,” according to Cat. An optional reversing fan can “prevent material build up by the rear door intake screen” to “reduce cleaning maintenance for the motor grader’s cooling system,” the company adds.

There are also several options aimed at improving operator comfort. One is a heating and cooling system designed to not only provide temperature control, but also dehumidify and pressurize the cab while also “circulating fresh air to seal out dust and keep windows clear,” Cat says. While the Cat 140 GC comes standard with a static seat, there are also options for mechanical and air suspension seats.
