Caterpillar says that its new 30,400-pound (13.8-metric-ton) excavators, the 313 and 313 GC, have a stronger engine and can improve operator efficiencies by up to 45%. The 110-horsepower 313 and the 74-hp, low-maintenance 313 GC both feature a maximum digging depth of 19 feet, 9 inches (6 meters) and a maximum ground level reach of 28 ft, 4 in (8.6 meters). The 313 and 313 GC use Cat Advansys bucket tips, which are long-lasting and easy to switch out, according to the manufacturer.

    Efficiency Gains

The new 313 and 313 GC offer 10% better fuel efficiency than Cat’s older 313F and 313F GC models. The Cat C3.6 engine’s cooling system can keep the work going in hot weather up to 125 degrees Fahrenheit (52 degrees Celsius). Both excavators meet Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emission standards, although the 313 GC does so without diesel exhaust fluid. The 313 GC also costs up to 25% less to maintain than the existing 313F GC, and Cat is targeting it toward the rental and municipal markets.

The new excavators’ hydraulic system needs no pilot lines, thanks to a new main control valve. The valve change also mitigates pressure losses and improves fuel economy. A new hydraulic oil filter lasts up to 50% longer (3,000 hours) while doing a better job of filtering, Cat says. Also, swing torque has been improved by 10%.

    Command Center Comfort

The 313 models’ bigger cab has 40% greater visibility and 33% better defrosting capability compared to the previous F Series excavators. Interior noise levels and vibration are lower, too. Buyers of the 313 (non-GC) can opt for a deluxe or premium cab, as well as for a 360-degree camera view. Right-hand and rear-view cameras come standard in both new Cats, as does a Bluetooth radio with hands-free calling support and a larger 10-inch touchscreen control panel.

The factory-equipped Cat Grade with 2D system, standard in the 313 and 313 GC, is upgradeable to Cat Grade with Advanced 2D and Cat Grade with 3D for more precise excavation. Finally, Cat Product Link remote management and the Cat Payload on-board weighing system both come standard, as well.
