Next Generation Cat 395 Excavator Offers Up To 10% Increase In Swing Torque & Stick Force

    Posted On: March 19, 2020

“In this size class, production is the most critical contractor requirement,” says Brian Abbott, worldwide product manager for Caterpillar large excavators. “The 395 delivers that and so much more.” (Photo courtesy of Caterpillar.)

Caterpillar is replacing its 390F Excavator with the 395 Excavator, and the new model is said to offer more productivity, twice the structural durability, and 20% less maintenance. “We increased swing torque and stick force by 10%,” says Brian Abbott, worldwide product manager for Caterpillar large excavators. “These increases enable contractors to use larger buckets for much greater productivity.”

    Key Specs

The 395 Excavator is rated for an operating weight of 205,471 pounds (93,200 kilograms), maximum digging depth of 31 feet, 8 inches (4 meters), and a maximum reach of 48 ft, 3 in (14.8 m). Cat equips the 395 Excavator with a C18 engine that produces up to 543 horsepower (405 kilowatts). Three modes of operation are available: Power, Smart, and ECO. Power mode is maximum power at all times; ECO mode lowers engine speed and cycle times while maintaining breakout force. Smart mode takes the guesswork out by automatically matching engine and hydraulic power to the actual digging conditions to reduce fuel consumption and optimize performance.

    Durability & Maintenance Improvements

Cat indicates the booms, sticks, and frames on the 395 are twice as strong as those on the 390F. The booms, for example, have increased top and bottom plate thickness; sticks have increased side, bottom, and bracket plate thickness; and frames have increased base frame and counterweight mounting plate thickness. Cat also reinforced the excavator’s car body, track link, track rollers, and cylinders.

To extend maintenance intervals, Cat has improved its filters. The new Cat air filter features an integrated pre-cleaner, while the primary and secondary filters provide double the dust-holding capacity of the previous design. The Cat hydraulic return filter has been bumped to a 3,000-hour service life, while fuel system filters are synchronized for service at 1,000 hours. To ease maintenance, the fuel system’s water and sediment drains and hydraulic system’s oil level check are positioned close together at ground level.
