Grove GMK7450 All-Terrain Crane Helps Upgrade Paris ‘Green Star’ Energy Plant

A waste-to-energy plant in Saint-Ouen, Paris, France needed to update its fume treatment system, and the task fell to Italian crane services company Vernazza Autogru. In order to upgrade the L’Etoile Verte “Green Star” plant operated by Syctom to a more environmentally friendly level of power and emissions output, Vernazza Autogru selected a 550-ton (450-metric-ton) Grove GMK7450 all-terrain crane with its optional Mega-Wing-Lift attachment and counterweight. Mega-Wing-Lift increases the crane’s already considerable capacity by more than 40% on its boom and more than 230% on its luffing jib, according to Grove.

“Replacing the fume aftertreatment system at the L’Etoile Verte plant requires a crane that is flexible, reactive, and compact,” says Paolo Delfino, general director of Vernazza’s French branch. “We chose the Grove GMK7450 for its good load capacity—very near to 500 [metric tons]. So far, our operators have found it simple to use and it has been a reliable machine for continuous utilization.”

    The Grove GMK7450

The mighty GMK7450 is a seven-axle crane with three steering axles and a 185,000-pound (84-mt) gross vehicle weight. A tag axle is optional, as is a four-steering axle configuration.

The GMK7450 has a 197-foot (60-meter), five-section, MEGAFORM-cross section boom with large wear pad surfaces and a Twin-Lock hydraulic boom pinning design. Grove offers it with optional heavy-duty and luffing jibs, as well as lattice extensions, enabling the crane to reach a maximum tip height of 448 ft. (136 m). The cab on the superstructure can tilt up to 20 degrees to maintain operator visibility on the job.

    Mercedes-Benz Power

Both the carrier and superstructure of the big GMK7450 are powered by Mercedes-Benz diesel engines. A fully automatic Allison transmission helps the crane reach travel speeds of up to 53 mph (85 km/h), while Grove’s Megatrak independent suspension provides off-road handling and stability.
