Wacker Neuson’s Battery-Electric EZ17e Mini-Excavator Can Work Untethered
Wacker Neuson has launched its new EZ17e battery-electric mini-excavator that it says can provide a whole workday of operating time on a charge. Equipped with a lithium-ion battery, the fully electric digger can quick-charge through a 415-volt source in only four hours, or longer with a 110- or 230-volt outlet. The zero-tail overhang EZ17e can be used either with or without a power cable. The latter option makes cold weather operation possible thanks to an integrated battery heater.
Can Work Indoors
“With the EZ17e, we have implemented a zero-tail concept with generous performance dimensions,” says Stefan Bogner, managing director of Wacker Neuson’s research and development center for excavators. “With the efficient, intuitive, and emission-free excavator, we satisfy the high standards of professionals who work in particularly confined space conditions, as is usual in interior demolition, for example.”
The EZ17e’s operator can steer it using a Jog Dial, and can operate its quick hitch through the 7-inch color display in the cab. The excavator won a SaMoTer Innovation Award earlier in 2020.
Details on the electric EZ17e are scarce at this writing, but its diesel-powered twin the EZ17 has an operating weight of 3,801 to 4,299 pounds (1,724 to 1,950 kilograms), a 97.9-inch (2,486-millimeter) digging depth, and a 95.9- to 100.47-in (2,436- to 2,550-mm) dumping height. Its working width is 51.2 in (1,300 mm).
All In The Family
The new EZ17e is part of Wacker Neuson’s growing stable of zero-emission machines, which currently includes three battery-powered tampers, three battery-powered vibratory plate compactors, a diesel-powered mini-excavator that can also use an electro-hydraulic drive, an electric wheel loader, electric track and wheel dumpers, and an electric concrete vibrator.
“In 2015, we put the first battery-powered rammer on the market and from the start, designed a sustainable system for our customers’ purposes,” says Wacker Neuson Group Sales Director Alexander Greschner. “Today, the modular battery can be used in seven units. With the mini-excavator EZ17e, we have expanded our zero-emission series. With more than 12 machines, an entire inner-city construction site can be operated completely free of exhaust emissions, without limitations in the sequence of operations or in performance, not least because of the consistently retained zero-tail design.”
