Crane manufacturer Liebherr has made a higher-capacity head and hook block available for its 880-ton (800-metric-ton) LR 1800-1.0 crawler crane. Outfitted with the new head (also rated at 800 tons), the lattice boom crane hoisted a test load of 1,100 t (1,000 mt), demonstrating a 25% safety margin over the rated maximum capacity. The standard head for the LR 1800-1.0 is Liebherr’s 717-t (650-mt) S head.

“The standard head is absolutely adequate for the vast majority of jobs,” says Liebherr’s Crawler Crane Product Manager, Jens Könneker. “However, the LR 1800-1.0 is designed to produce its maximum lifting capacity in real-world conditions as it can hoist 880 mt with a 9-meter radius on a 57-m boom. That gives it plenty of scope for real applications. That is why we built the 880-mt head, and now we have tested it as well.”

    A Shared Hook Block

In order to set up the LR 1800-1.0 for the test, Liebherr equipped it with a 108-ft (33-m) derrick boom, 77 t (70 mt) of central ballast, 187 t (170 mt) of slewing platform ballast, and 251 t (228 mt) of derrick ballast on a new ballast trailer. The manufacturer notes that the crane could also have passed the test using suspended ballast.

The new head also comes with a new hook block that’s usable on both the LR 1800-1.0 and the LR 11000. “That is very important for customers who have both crane models,” says Könneker. “It enables them to use this block for both cranes flexibly and economically. As a result of the higher rope pull on the LR 11000, it can hoist up to 1,000 mt.”

    Crane Specifications

The big 1800-1.0 crawler crane has a lightweight/heavyweight main boom that can be extended up to 590 ft (180 m). With additional components it can reach a maximum 663-ft (202-m) hoist height and attain a 498-ft (152-m) radius. The crane is powered by a 610-horsepower, eight-cylinder Liebherr diesel.

The LR 1800-1.0’s carrier and superstructure measure 36 ft (11 m) wide and 58.7 ft (17.9 m) in length. The crane has a wide range of boom and jib combinations, including a 127-ft (39-m) derrick, heavy luffing fly jib, and suspended ballast V-frame configurations.

The LR 1800-1.0’s tilting cabin features air conditioning, thermally insulating glass, and a roof window that Liebherr says is bulletproof. There are also two color displays for the crane’s four-camera system. Three four-way joysticks and a pair of two-way hand/foot levers provide independent control over all of the crane’s movements.
