Vermeer says its precise, productive PD10 pile driver is perfect for the solar panel installation industry, arguing that it can meet the tight tolerances contractors require. With demand high for solar field construction, U.S. rental giants Sunbelt and United Rentals have selected Vermeer’s PD10 in their efforts to supply the market.

    The Vermeer PD10

The configurable PD10 pile driver can use a 10-, 15-, or 20-foot (3-, 4.6-, or 6.1-meter) mast, and ranges in operating weight from 14,135 to 15,980 pounds (6,412 to 7,248 kilograms). Its 49-horsepower (36.5-kilowatt) Deutz four-cylinder engine comes in a Tier 4 Final / EU Stage IIIA version as well as an edition that meets Tier 4 Interim emissions standards.

The PD10’s high-frequency hammer can bring 700 foot-pounds (950 Newton-meters) of energy to bear on piles of up to 9.3 inches (236 millimeters) in diameter. It can drive piles at an angle of up to 20 degrees perpendicular to its line of travel and 11 degrees in the direction of its travel. Its wide, urethane-padded steel tracks can move the PD10 at up to 1.7 mph (2.7 km/h).

    Accuracy & Control

A button-activated autoplumb feature comes standard on the pile driver, so it’s always ready to hammer piles home at a true angle. The PD10 also supports various GPS systems for accurate positioning, depth, and angle. The Vermeer machine provides the operator with two joysticks and a control system with an informative display. A remote control is optional, as is a 1,500-ft (457-m) laser receiver.
