Wirtgen’s New W 380 CRi Cold Recycler Leads Full-Depth Reclamation Project Of South Carolina Highway

The Wirtgen Group, owner of the Wirtgen, VÖGELE, and HAMM construction equipment brands, says its new Wirtgen W 380 CRi cold recycler recently demonstrated its “unmatched capabilities” during the full-depth reclamation project of a 7-mile, four-lane stretch of Highway 123 in Pickens County, South Carolina. The 1,038-horsepower (775-kilowatt) tracked Wirtgen accomplished the work in concert with a VÖGELE SUPER 2000-3i paver and a Hamm HD+ 140 VV-HF tandem as part of a cold-recycling paving train run by contractor King Asphalt, rehabilitating the road to a 7.9-inch (20-centimeter) depth in one pass.

    “Worked Like A Charm”

The project involved widening the highway to 14.5 feet (4.4 meters), which meant first using Wirtgen cold milling machines to mill off 2 ft. (60 cm) of the road’s inner edge bordering the passing lane. The W 380 CRi-led recycling train then milled the damaged pavement to a 12.6-ft. (3.8-meter) width while also granulating the material and mixing in a foamed bitumen, pre-spread cement, and water mixture. By project’s end, the W 380 CRi had recycled more than 100,000 tons of asphalt, Wirtgen says.

“It worked like a charm,” says King Asphalt President Mike Crenshaw. “I’ve never seen another machine that can even come close. More than 7 U.S. tons rolled over the discharge conveyor every minute.”

    Vital Statistics

Along with a 13.8-in. (35.02-cm) working depth, the W 380 CRi supports a maximum working width of 12.6 ft, but it can restore a surface beyond that width by picking up pre-milled material and adding it to the mixing process. The cold recycler has a 787-ton-per-hour mixing capacity.
