Komatsu Intelligent Machine Control 2.0 Now Available In D51i-24 & Midsize D61i-24 Crawler Dozers

    Posted On: January 12, 2021

Construction crews can now put Komatsu iMC 2.0 technology to use via the company’s small-sized D51i-24 (shown here) and midsize D61i-24 crawler dozers, providing operators a host of automation abilities, including proactive dozing control. (Photo courtesy of Komatsu.)

Komatsu’s intelligent Machine Control (iMC) 2.0 technology is now available in the manufacturer’s 131-horsepower (97.7-kilowatt) D51i-24 and 168-hp (125.3-kW) D61i-24 crawler dozers. Both models are available in EXi and PXi configurations.

The goal behind iMC 2.0 is to enable contractors to quickly whip a construction site into a highly efficient, productive operation by adding automation functionality ranging from rough cut to finish grade stages. Komatsu says iMC 2.0 enables operators, even those with relatively little experience, to work at top efficiency and make each pass count, leading to superior production.

    Self-Learning Technology

The D51i-24 belongs to Komatsu’s small dozer lineup of 70- to 150-hp (52.2- to 111.9-kW) models, and the D61i-24 belongs to the midsize family of 151- to 260-hp (112.6- to 93.9-kW) dozers. Komatsu also offers large dozer and mining dozer categories, with models spanning from 261 hp (194.6 kW) to 500 hp (372.9 kW) and greater. With either the D51i-24 or D61i-24, Komatsu says owners can expect numerous iMC-related benefits.

Komatsu’s “learn as it works” automated functionality enables the D51i-24 and D61i-24 (shown here) crawler dozers to measure the terrain they’re tracking to plan the next pass, helping improve productivity by as much as 60%. (Photo courtesy of Komatsu.)

Benefits include proactive dozing control, or “learns as it works” functionality, whereby the dozer measures the terrain it’s tracking to plan the subsequent pass. This enhances productivity upward of 60% compared to the previous generation, says Komatsu, adding that automated spread fill from the existing terrain is push-button easy, as is quickly creating a temporary design surface. For example, crews could use automated input to start stripping or spreading while waiting for a finish grade model to arrive, Komatsu notes. The manufacturer also claims that steering control automatically tilts the blade for constant straight travel, helping to lessen operator steering input by 80%.
