Caterpillar Unveils 10 New Tandem & Combination Utility Compactors

Construction outfits, contractors, and rental companies have 10 new tandem and combination utility compactors from Caterpillar to consider in the 2.2- to 5.5-ton (2- to 5-tonne) weight range. The new lineup also includes new GC-series models equipped with a 24.6-horsepower (18.4-kilowatt) turbocharged Cat C1.7T engine that meets U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final emissions standards without an aftertreatment system. All of the new compactors come with new operator safety features and Cat ET (electronic technician) diagnostic software that spots existing and potential issues. Compaction widths range from 39 to 54 inches (99 to 137 centimeters).

Weight-Based Name Changes

Caterpillar says it engineered the new compactors to enhance productivity and efficiency and to provide simpler operation and maintenance. They are designed for use in parking lots, driveways, and city streets, and on construction sites.

The manufacturer named the new models based on their operating weights in kilograms:

• The 2,521-kilogram CB2.5 and CB2.5 GC replace the CB22B
• The 2,698-kg CB2.7 and CB2.7 GC replace the CB24B
• The 2,599-kg CC2.7 and CC2.7 GC replace the CC24B
• The 2,916-kg CB2.9 replaces the CB32B
• The 3,623-kg CB4.0 replaces the CB34B
• The 3,586-kg CC4.0 replaces the CC34B
• The 3,801-kg CB4.4 replaces the CB36B

A Laundry List Of Upgrades

The CG models are well-suited for rental and low- to medium-duty jobs. The other seven compactors deliver greater power and production performance, with advanced hydraulics, exclusive power-management software, and a new auto-idle shutdown feature that conserves fuel and hours logged. All 10 include re-engineered operator controls like easy-to-use rocker switches and a Cat display, which are meant to shorten the acclimation period for new operators. Caterpillar also added a switch for governing low and high vibration frequencies, as well as automatic vibration control that helps prevent asphalt mat markings that can occur when vibration stops and the travel lever is in neutral.

Other new features include an integrated water tank level gauge that makes it easy for operators to keep an eye on their water supply and better-positioned spray bar nozzles that prevent material build-up on the drum. A new spray test mode lets users adjust the nozzles’ angle for optimal drum coverage. Operator visibility is improved thanks to the compactors’ narrow design, and optional compaction measurement value (CMV) displays report material stiffness to operators, improving compaction performance and eliminating unnecessary passes.
