Liebherr Addresses Need For 33-Ton & Under Excavators With New R 928 G8
Liebherr’s new R 928 G8 crawler excavator is the eighth member of the manufacturer’s Generation 8 lineup, which ranges from 24.3 to 49.6 tons (22 to 45 metric tons). Liebherr says the R 928 G8 meets a market need for excavators that weigh 33 t (30 mt) or slightly less. Developed and produced by Liebherr-France SAS, the latest G8 crawler excavator has an operating weight of 32.6 t (29.6 mt), which positions it between the R 926 G8 and R 930 G8 models.
The R 928 G8 Up Close
The R 928 G8 shares the same superstructure and equipment as the R 926 G8 and same LC (long carriage) or NLC (narrow long carriage) as the R 930 G8, Liebherr notes, adding that Generation 8 models use new, more robust X-form undercarriages. The R 928 G8’s defining characteristics, the manufacturer says, include a high drawbar pull, excellent load-bearing capacity, and a bucket capacity ranging from 1.63 to 2.42 cubic yards (1.25 to 1.9 cubic meters). The excavator is equipped with a Liebherr four-cylinder D934 A7-25 Tier 4 Final engine rated for 201 horsepower (150 kilowatts) at 1,800 rpm and 918 pounds-foot (1,245 newton-meters) of torque at 1,100 rpm. Liebherr says its Generation 8 models provide higher tear and breakout forces compared to its previous crawler excavators.
Inside The Cab
The R 928 G8’s ROPS (rollover protection system) cab includes a 7-inch color touchscreen that provides access to various machine information as well as the views from the excavator’s rear and side surveillance cameras. Operators will also find an air-sprung Liebherr-Comfort seat with automatic weight adjustment and vertical and longitudinal seat damping, as well as new LED interior lighting. In addition, Liebherr outfits the cab with a raisable control unit, a rear window that doubles as an emergency exit, and a fully retractable front window.
