New 29-Ton Caterpillar 816 Landfill Compactor Built For Comfort, Productivity, & Lower Maintenance Requirements
Caterpillar’s new 816 landfill compactor has an operating weight of 57,345 pounds (26,011 kilograms) and is available with Paddle wheel tips for traction and fuel economy, Plus tips for stability on side slopes, or a combination of both. Cat designed the 816 with enhanced guards to protect its mechanisms from debris. The compactor also features various structural improvements, a new cab design, and up to 12% lower maintenance requirements.
Efficient Performance
The 816 compactor gets its power from a Cat C7.1 engine with 284 gross horsepower (212 kilowatts). The engine’s Tier 4 Final/Stage V emissions control system includes a diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC), a diesel particulate filter (DPF), and automatic Cat Regeneration System with selective catalytic reduction (SCR).
The 816’s planetary powershift transmission is controlled by Caterpillar’s all-new Advanced Productivity Electronic Control System. APECS improves the transmission’s shifting performance, and also carries the machine’s momentum through the shift points for uninterrupted progress on slopes. The 816’s maximum forward travel speed is 7.5 mph (12 km/h).
Protection & Maintenance
Cat says the 816’s main structures are designed to be rebuilt for a long and economical service life. The compactor has a 13.08-cubic-yard (10-cubic-meter) straight blade to move garbage as needed.
Striker bars and optional cleaner fingers prevent debris from building up on the tipped drums, while new frame deflectors keep rubbish away from the frame and hood enclosure on the machine. Its service doors are secured with a new captive hinge to keep them from accidentally opening during operation.
The 816 can alert the operator if a blockage occurs in the engine’s screened air intake. Its new, radial air filter lasts four times longer than the previous filter. An auto-reversing cooling fan periodically ejects debris from the radiator, and the driver has the ability to manually activate it more often as needed.
Cat equipped the 816 with sight gauges for an easy, non-contaminating way to check on the levels of coolant and transmission and hydraulic oil. Centralized grease points and grouped service points make maintenance a faster affair. The 816 also provides ground-level access to its emergency shutdown, battery disconnect, and jump start features.
User Comfort
Caterpillar pressurized the 816’s cab to reduce noise and keep out dust and odors. Automatic climate control maintains the operator’s preferred temperature, and the new Premium Plus seat with boasts a leather finish and several powered adjustments. The seat uses dynamic end dampening to avoid jarring shocks. Toward the same end, the compactor’s cab rests on isolation mounts to mitigate vibration. A rearview camera comes standard in the 816 for safer operation.
The Cat Steering and Transmission Integrated Control System (STIC), which combines steering, gear shifting, and more into one control lever, has been improved to provide shorter, faster cycles, Cat says. A keyed ignition starts the machine, which has an electrohydraulic parking brake switch and new membrane switch panels.
A 3G touchscreen display gives the operator access to the compactor’s Vital Information Management System (VIMS), which highlights potential problems before failure can occur. The Cat Compact system guides the user to higher compaction densities with machine position reporting and a count of completed passes. Cat Compact also reduces fuel expenditure and wear on the compactor, the manufacturer says. The Cat 816 also supports an optional 3D mapping system as well as Cat Link and VisionLink telematics for remote management.
