JLG recently unveiled its new 450AJ HC3 articulating boom lift. The firm’s Hi-Capacity HC3 models have greater lifting capacity and weight in the same footprint as standard JLG models.

The 450AJ HC3 is a diesel-powered, three-person lift with a 45-foot (13.7-meter) platform height and a 25-ft (7.6-m) horizontal outreach. The ANSI A92.20 / CSA B354.6-compliant machine has an automatic load-sensing system, and it can be calibrated without weights.

    Three Capacity Zones

At shorter boom lengths, the 450AJ HC3 has a restricted capacity of 1,000 pounds (454 kilograms). The lift can support up to 750 lbs (340 kg) at medium extension lengths, and up to an unrestricted capacity of 660 lbs (299 kg) at its longest boom length. The lift’s automatic load-sensing system limits operation when the load is too heavy.

“JLG has engineered load-sensing technology that is advanced enough to allow operators to respond to an overload situation, quickly and easily,” says JLG Marketing Manager for Boom Lifts, Randi McClure. “By removing or unloading items from the machine’s platform, for example, the 450AJ HC3 model will recognize when it’s back within its rated load capacity, then enable operations to resume without the need to recalibrate the machine.”

Likewise, a chassis tilt alarm sounds and the 450AJ HC3 limits its operation when the surface slopes too much to be safe. “This innovative JLG system permits operators to utilize restricted functionality to return the machine to a work area within acceptable operating conditions,” McClure says. “Once the machine recognizes that it’s back within the allowable tilt range, operators are able to reposition the machine or grade the worksite to complete work within the rated load and slope tolerance of the machine.” The four-wheel-drive machine has a 45% gradeability rating.

    Other Features & Details

The 450AJ HC3’s platform LED display and ground controls automatically adjust their brightness levels to the ambient light conditions. The boom supports 355 degrees of non-continuous swing. A U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final-compliant, 49-horsepower (36.5-kilowatt), four-cylinder Deutz D2.9 engine powers the lift, which can travel at speeds of up to 4.3 mph (6.84 km/h).
