Grove brand owner Manitowoc recently delivered a 300-ton (250-metric-ton) Grove GMK5250XL-1 to Sistermi, a Brazilian lifting and cargo handling equipment and services provider. The delivery of the all-terrain crane, which Manitowoc says has the longest boom on five axles, was the first to Brazil and all of South America. The GMK5250XL-1 went to work soon upon its arrival, carrying out maintenance tasks at the Port of Vitória.

    Efficient & Intuitive

Sistermi’s fleet of Grove lifting equipment also includes rough-terrain cranes and carry deck compact industrial cranes. The addition of the GMK5250XL-1 is part of Sistermi’s strategy to continually renew its fleet and stay ahead of market demands. Sistermi notes that operators and engineers have high praise for the GMK5250XL-1’s systems and onboard computer, and in particular, Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CCS).

“Our operators described CCS as ‘efficient and intuitive,’ making day-to-day work on construction sites much easier,” says Sistermi Managing Director Michelle Flausino Boechat Melo.

    A Quality Brand

Sistermi leases cranes, large vehicles, and equipment for rigging, handling, and lifting applications to companies in the oil and gas, energy, metal mechanics, mining, and ironworks sectors. Founded in 1979, the company visited Manitowoc’s U.S. and German factories, viewing firsthand enhancements Manitowoc has made to its crane production lines and development processes, and offering its own suggestions to Manitowoc technicians.

“Machines and equipment can be good, but if there is no competent parts replacement and service, they become a problem,” says CEO Aarão Boechat Martins. “Local support is extremely important, and we have had a constructive partnership with Grove and Manitowoc in Brazil. Grove is a brand with quality to look out for.”

    The GMK5250XL-1

Along with its long boom, the GMK5250XL-1 combines high lifting capacities and a small footprint to provide what Manitowoc says is excellent maneuverability. The crane has a 257.5-foot (78.5-meter) eight-section Twin-Lock boom, and a 58.4-ft (17.8-m) swingaway with jib and/or boom insert, giving it a maximum length of 111 ft (33.8 m) and an up to 50-degree offset. The crane features a VIAB turbo retarder clutch and single-engine design that meets the latest emissions levels, helping reduce operating costs through 30% lower diesel usage as compared to previous models, Manitowoc says.

The GMK5250XL-1 is powered by a Mercedes-Benz OM471LA engine and a Mercedes-Benz G 280-16 16-speed transmission and comes with interchangeable counterweight slabs and a self-rigging auxiliary hoist. Operators can move the crane while it’s carrying its full 88.2-t (80-mt) counterweight load, and the crane can travel in that configuration. The self-rigging auxiliary hoist eliminates the need for an assist crane during on-site rigging.
