Volvo Construction Equipment’s largest off-highway dump truck, the high-productivity R100, is now available to markets with the strictest emissions regulations thanks to a new Tier 4 Final / Euro Stage V-compliant engine. The fuel-efficient Cummins QST30 diesel power plant produces 1,050 horsepower (783 kilowatts) and high torque for top pulling power and rim pull. The R100 can bring a 105-ton (95-metric-ton) payload capacity and a 79-cubic-yard (60.4-cubic-meter) heaped body volume to mining and quarrying applications anywhere in the world.

    Safe & Controllable

Volvo designed the R100 for fast cycle times, durability, and high uptime. Its fuel efficiency is enhanced by an Economy shifting mode, an adjustable auto-idle shutdown feature, and Volvo Dynamic Shift Control, which selects the best gear, engine speed, and torque for the job. Its optional, gear-sensitive On-Board Weighing system with load logging helps the operator achieve a consistent average target payload.

Two retardation systems reduce driver effort and make operation of the big truck easier. A modulating braking retarder helps regulate downhill motion by automatically activating when the operator’s foot is removed from the accelerator. On steep declines and in wet conditions, a manually enabled transmission retarder limits wheel lock-up to maintain control over traction. Volvo says both retarders help extend primary brake life.

Safety features of the R100 include a rollover protection system (ROPS)- and falling object protection system (FOPS)-certified cab, anti-slip steps and walkways, and secondary brake and steering systems. A neutral coast inhibitor and engine overspeed protection guard against damage from over-revving situations.

    Bird’s-Eye View

Volvo isolates the R100’s cab from noise and vibration using viscous mounts. Large windows and a low-rake windshield provide the driver with high visibility supplemented by the Volvo Smart View 360-degree camera system. The cab’s fully adjustable air suspension seat and low-effort steering reduce operator fatigue and encourage productivity. Volvo’s CareTrack telematics system provides wireless machine monitoring and other services.

    Durable Design

Volvo engineered its R100 with a low center of gravity, even weight distribution, and rugged construction. Its exhaust-heated dump body is made of high-impact, abrasion-resistant 400-HBW steel. The V-shaped body is designed for high load retention with minimal load shift and carry-back of material.

The R100 has a dynamic McPherson-style front suspension, direct rim-mounted wheels, suspended mount tanks, and sleeved bores for long-lasting reliability. Its “horse collar” frame allows it to flex torsionally when traversing uneven terrain.

Volvo enhanced the R100’s uptime with well-protected components with longer service life and greater maintenance intervals. Advanced, long-lasting filtration systems protect the hydraulics, steering, brake pump and cooling units, and engine air intake. The engine oil and fuel filters each have two stages to ward off gross debris and fine contaminants. Volvo grouped the R100’s service points at ground level and its service platform for quick, convenient maintenance.

    Specifications

The Volvo R100—also known as the R100E—has a 153,777-pound (69,752-kilogram) net weight and a 366,585-lb (166,280-kg) gross operating weight. Its colossal Stage V engine can produce 3,416 pounds-foot (4,631 newton-metres) of gross torque for dependable performance, even on steep slopes. On the roadway, the hauler can travel at up to 31 mph (50 km/h).
