Reliable, low-cost operation is the calling card of Caterpillar’s new 120 GC Motor Grader. The iconic yellow iron company says the 120 GC excels in low- to medium-duty applications, including government and municipal work, county road maintenance, and finish grading. The grader is equipped with Cat’s fuel-efficient C4.4 engine meeting either Tier 4 Final or Tier 3 equivalent standards; both engine options produce 171 horsepower (128 kilowatts). The 120 GC features the same steering wheel and level layout as Cat’s 120, 140, and 160K models, and Cat further simplifies operation by including a torque converter on the transmission to eliminate the need for an inching pedal, reducing the controls to a throttle and brake pedals.

    Drawbar Reliability

Cat equips the 120 GC Motor Grader with a drawbar circle moldboard featuring hardened circle teeth and replaceable wear inserts, additions designed to protect the main component structure. Cat avoids damage from immovable objects with a circle drive slip clutch option that protects the 120 GC’s drawbar, circle, and moldboard. There’s also a Circle Saver option to reduce daily greasing requirements. Cat says the grader’s new front axle design maximizes bearing life and minimizes maintenance.

Options To Get The Job Done Right

Customers have plenty of options to increase the 120 GC Motor Grader’s flexibility. The all-wheel-drive option, for instance, increases traction and delivers increased engine power for better performance on slopes with poor underfoot conditions. Moldboard options include 10-, 12-, and 14-foot (3-, 3.7-, and 4.3-m) lengths so customers can dial in the best fit for road coverage. Customers can also select a Digital Blade Slope Meter to display the current grade in the cab, obviating the need for manual grade checks. To improve machine performance, a wide range of front bolsters are available, and the rear of the machine can accommodate a ripper or tow hitch.
