New Caterpillar 340 UHD Excavator Has Sufficient Reach For 8-Floor Structures
Caterpillar’s new 340 Ultra High Demolition (UHD) excavator improves upon the 340F UHD with a 13% higher pin height, which gives it the reach needed to work with eight-floor structures. In addition to the higher vertical reach, Cat provides the 340 UHD with more configuration flexibility, including support for a greater range of UHD and retrofit boom and stick configurations. Two UHD front options are available, including a 72.16-foot (22-meter) front with a maximum weight of 8,160 pounds (3,701 kilograms) at stick pin and an 82-ft (25-m) front with a 7,280-lb (3,302-kg) maximum weight at stick pin. The new coupling systems allows operators to switch the 340 UHD front, as well as retrofit booms and sticks, with no special tools in 15 minutes.
Ultra High Demolition Capabilities
The 340 UHD is powered by a Cat C9.3B engine rated for 311 horsepower (232 kilowatts) that can run on diesel or biodiesel (up to B20). When selecting boom options, contractors have one- or two-piece choices, and the one-piece retrofit boom works with Cat Payload technology to deliver real-time weighing and payload estimates. Stick length options include 9.16 ft (2.8 m), 10.5 ft (3.2 m), and 12.8 ft (3.9 m), and the 340 UHD’s greater flexibility also extends to a wider range of Cat demolition attachments. Cat E-fence and Cat Grade provide depth, slope, and horizontal distance guidance during operation to further boost productivity.
Safer Demolition
The high-resolution touchscreen in the 340 UHD’s cab provides efficient configuration management and makes it easy to review operating parameters. Cat’s active stability system will inform operators when work tools approach stability limitations, as well as when the tool is in a safe working range, thanks to a stability bar that changes length and color from green to yellow to red based on the stability ratio. For a more comfortable line of sight when working on tall buildings, the 340 UHD is equipped with a 30-degree tilt-up cab, and is further equipped with rearview and sideview cameras to enhance visibility of the operating area.
