JLG’s ‘3-In-1’ R1370, R1385, & R11100 Act As Telehandlers, Mobile Elevating Work Platforms & Rough-Terrain Cranes

With its three new rotating telehandlers, JLG aims to introduce a product category that’s popular in Europe to more of the North American market. Its new R1370, R1385, and R11100 can do everything a conventional telescopic forklift can do, but their 360-degree, continuously rotating upper frames give them greater versatility. For example, on constricted job sites, a rotating telehandler can sit in one place while moving objects horizontally as well as vertically.

“Rotating telehandlers offer the ability to place the machine in a fixed position and reach multiple areas of the site, which means less repositioning and a reduction in machine traffic,” says JLG Vice President Of Engineering Rogerio dos Santos.

JLG’s new trio have lift capacities of 11,000 to 13,200 pounds (4,990 to 5,990 kilograms) and maximum reach heights of 67 to 97 feet (20.4 to 29.6 meters).

“On today’s jobsites, contractors are faced with tighter workspaces, more stringent safety protocols and reduced workforces,” dos Santos says. “Rotating telehandlers can help improve both productivity and safety, while reducing the number of machines and machine operators required on congested urban sites.”

    3-In-1 Workhorses

The 134-horsepower (100-kilowatt) JLG R1370 has a 67-ft max lift height and a 13,200-lb lift capacity with its four-section boom. The R1385 also has a four-section boom and the same maximum lifting capacity, but it has an 84.5-ft (25.8-m) reach and a 168-HP (125-kW) engine. The R11100—JLG’s highest-reaching telehandler—can achieve a 97-ft lift height with its five-section boom. It shares the R1385’s 168-HP rating but tops out at an 11,000-lb lift capacity.

JLG says the new models are like three machines in one: a traditional telehandler, a mobile elevating work platform, and a rough-terrain crane. Attachments available from the manufacturer include work platforms, crane jibs and winches, standard and rotating carriages, forks, buckets, truss booms, and coupler-mounted hooks. Continuous auxiliary hydraulics and electrics come standard on each rotating telehandler, with dual-auxiliary hydraulics for multifunction attachments available as an option.

JLG equips the trio’s booms with cylinder- and chain-driven telescoping mechanisms in order to attain the desired reach and lift capacity. The operator can use an inching feature to run the boom at optimal speed without having to shift the transmission into neutral. A soft stop feature slows the boom’s movements near the end of its stroke. A remote boom control comes with each machine for jobs better spotted from outside the cab.

Each rotating telehandler includes a two-speed, stop-to-shift hydrostatic transmission that according to JLG provides a smoother ride over bumpy ground. A rotation lock can secure the upper frame for travel. Foam-filled tires come standard, but air-filled tires are available in two tread styles.

Once the machine is in place, the operator can deploy scissor-style outriggers. These include jacks that can automatically level the telehandler on uneven terrain with up to 6 degrees of adjustment.

    Safety Systems

JLG claims that its R1370, R1385, and R11100 come with three exclusive technologies. An automatic attachment recognition system asks the operator to confirm, then displays the correct load capacity chart for the attachment. JLG’s Load Management Information System (LMIS) alerts the operator to a non-compliant load and keeps the boom from exceeding the load chart’s parameters. Finally, a Load Stability Indicator (LSI) limits the machine’s operation as a load approaches maximum capacity.

The cabin of the three handlers includes air conditioning and a secondary heater. A retractable shade on the ceiling of the cab can reduce overhead glare. The operator’s adjustable suspension seat has integrated armrests. The steering column is adjustable as well. A backup camera comes standard, as does a lighting package. Options include extra work lights and a directional white noise backup alarm.
