Komatsu Reveals 13.2-Ton Class 845-1 Forwarder For Thinning, Light Clear-Cutting Operations
Komatsu says that it engineered its new 845-1 forwarder for high productivity in thinning and light clear-cutting applications. The 845-1 is a 13.2-ton (12-metric-ton) class machine with a gross load rating of 26,455 pounds (12,000 kilograms). The new forwarder is highly maneuverable over rough terrain even with a full load, Komatsu says, and has a high-capacity, long-reach crane with remarkable lifting power and slewing torque.
Flexible & Configurable
Standard and optional equipment vary by market, but here’s a representative overview of the Komatsu 845-1’s features.
The new forwarder is available in various frame lengths. For extra ground clearance, the 845-1 rides on Komatsu Comfort Bogie axles with a high portal offset and V-shaped frames. An optional Comfort Ride suspension is available with ride height control that keeps the cab parallel to the frame.
Behind the Komatsu’s crane are movable FlexBunks that control the load of logs. The FlexGate is a flexible, full-height load gate available in a fixed or hydraulically operated configuration. Options for the load area include bunk wideners and hydraulic height-adjustable stakes.
Depending on the crane selected, the forwarder can offer 25.25 to 32.8 feet (7.7 to 10 meters) of reach, 75,969 to 93,670 pounds-foot (103,000 to 127,000 newton-meters) of gross lifting torque, and 21,168 lbf-ft (28,700 N-m) of slewing torque. A Komatsu rotator and grapple and a ProTec crane tip come standard.
Other options include an electric fuel refill pump and a heavy-duty stacking blade for leveling stumps or the ground. The blade is mounted high for ground clearance and does not interfere with the forwarder’s battery boxes or hood guard.
Smart Tractive Force Control
The 845-1 is powered by a Tier IV Final/EU Stage V engine that produces 188 horsepower (140 kilowatts) and 590 lbf-ft (800 N-m) of torque. For easy starting in cold weather, the Komatsu comes with a standard diesel heater that warms the engine coolant, hydraulic oil, and batteries.
The forwarder has a hydrostatic transmission with an intelligent control system that adapts its 38,218 lbf-ft (51,817 N-m) of tractive force to the load and conditions. The machine can travel at up to 15.5 mph (25 km/h). For easy service, Komatsu located its filters all together under its electrically tilting hood.
The 845-1’s high-visibility cab features ergonomic controls that are user-adjustable for sensitivity and speed. Komatsu’s MaxiXT system provides monitoring and control of the engine, crane, transmission, and other components of the forwarder including its service ladders. Cabin options include rear- and front-facing cameras and a touchscreen.
