The new S variant of JCB's 457 wheel loader features a new counterweight, transmission, and rear chassis, as well as other big updates that contribute to increased lifting and pushing performance. JCB says the 457S is designed for large-scale farm jobs such as muck spreading and loading silage. The new wheel loader features an Economy power mode that operates at 224 horsepower (167 kilowatts) and a Dynamic power mode of 282 HP (210 kW). JCB says Dynamic mode makes full use of the machine’s Cummins B6.7 engine, with a power-to-weight ratio of 14 HP (10.3 kW) per metric ton.

“The new 457S loading shovel is an important addition to our range, providing a further step up in bulk loading performance with tremendous pushing power to meet the requirements of operators carrying out the most demanding applications,” says JCB Agriculture Managing Director John Smith.

    High Capacity

The 457S wheel loader features heavy-duty, 20-stud axles with limited slip or auto-locking differentials, and JCB adds to this robust base with high-load capacity radial traction tires, available in 28- or 31.5-inch (710- or 800-millimeter) sizes. A new powershift transmission gives operators access to six forward and three reverse ratios to suit a variety of jobs and driver preferences. The list of powerful components continues with the loader’s aforementioned 6.7-liter, six-cylinder Cummins B6.7 engine, which offers 885 pounds-foot (1,200 newton-meters) of torque in Dynamic power mode. Operators can utilise the in-cab settings and select a torque converter lockup in any reverse gear or in any of the three lowest forward gears.

    Versatile Power

JCB offers a number of attachments and implements to adapt the 457S to a variety of tasks. There’s a 22-ton (20-metric-ton) Rockinger tow hitch that can be equipped with either twin-line or air-ready trailer braking to augment the loader’s hauling capability. If it’s front-end lift clearance that you need, you can upgrade from the machine’s standard High Torque arms, with a 14.1-foot (4.3-meter) lift height, to the High Lift option, which increases lift height to 15.7 ft (4.8 m). JCB says the High Lift attachment offers the necessary height to clear hoppers and feedstock bunkers. A Folding Grass Fork developed specifically for the 457S is also available to make short work of feedstock and silage chores.
