JCB Releases Fastest & Most Powerful Loadall Ever, The 542-70 Agri Pro Telehandler

    Posted On: May 4, 2022

JCB recently launched its new flagship Loadall 542-70 Agri Pro telehandler, the most powerful Loadall ever. The machine’s engine is rated for 173 horsepower, or 24 HP more than any current model. (Photo courtesy of JCB.)

Featuring a 4.8-liter, four-cylinder DieselMAX engine rated for 173 horsepower (127 kilowatts) and 509 pounds-foot (690 newton-meters) of torque at 1,500 rpm, JCB's new 542-70 Agri Pro flagship telehandler is the most powerful Loadall model ever, topping current Loadalls by 24 HP (17 kW) and by 15% in peak torque output. Its top speed of 31 mph (50 km/h) also makes it the fastest Loadall ever by roughly 6 mph (10 km/h). JCB says combining such performance with the machine’s DualTech VT transmission’s hydrostatic drive element provides 22% more dynamic tractive effort when digging or scooping.

And that’s not all: a larger 72-cc (160-LPM) piston pump means a 14% increase in hydraulic flow, resulting in quick responses to joystick control inputs, especially when simultaneously executing multiple functions. The telehandler has a maximum lift capacity of 4.6 tons (4.2 metric tons), and can lift 3 t (2.7 mt) to a full height of 23 feet (7 meters).

“The Loadall design is already a world-beater in terms of performance and productivity, and now this new model takes materials handling capabilities to a new level, with a standard specification giving the machine tremendous operator appeal while setting a new benchmark for loading, handling, and towing,” says JCB Agriculture Managing Director John Smith.

    Under The Hood

JCB says the 542-70 Agri Pro’s DualTech VT hydrostatic-mechanical transmission is a new design. The hydrostatic drive delivers precise, progressive control up to 13.7 mph (22 km/h), JCB says, while the mechanical drive produces power-efficient performance up to 31 mph. Eco and Power modes are included, and a Flex mode lets operators separately control engine and ground speeds using foot pedals. Flex mode also makes it possible to work at lower speeds but with the power needed to operate hydraulic sweeper, straw processor, and silage feeder attachments.

Speaking of hydraulics, JCB says the telehandler’s regenerative cylinders provide faster boom lowering and retracting, plus cylinder end-stroke damping on the boom lift and retract arms. The Smart Hydraulic system also allows for automated bucket or fork rattling, which is handy for clearing sticky material or spreading materials with minimal control input. JCB has also added a new auto-engage JCB Smooth Ride System boom-suspension setup featuring optimized accumulators and hydraulic counterbalance valves. This results in enhanced boom oscillation, reduced risk of spilling or dislodging loads, and greater ride comfort.

    For The Operator

The 542-70 Agri Pro’s Command Plus cab includes new rubber spring and polymer mounts that dampen shocks and vibration. Roof-mounted air conditioning and a half-leather heated and vented air suspension seat with electrically adjustable lumber support come standard, and automatic climate control is available as an option.
