Liebherr R 9200 Face Shovel Excavators Get Down To Work At Iron Ore Mines In India

NMDC, India’s largest iron ore producer, recently purchased a pair of Liebherr mining excavators for two of its most prolific mines. The two Liebherr R 9200 face shovels are 231-ton (210-metric-ton) models equipped with optional 12-cubic-yard (9-cubic-meter) extra-heavy-duty buckets. They are assigned to work at the two Donimalai iron mines in the southern state of Karnataka, which normally produce approximately 7.7 million t (7 million mt) of ore each year but were on a two-plus-year hiatus until 2021. Liebherr designed the seventh-generation R 9200 excavators for high reliability and uptime, ease of service, and peak fuel efficiency.

    The Liebherr R 9200

The standard face shovel bucket for the Liebherr R 9200 has a capacity of 16.3 cu yds (12.5 cu m). The machine’s maximum crowd force is 207,723 pounds-force (924 kilonewtons), and its max breakout force is 168,606 lbf (750 kN). The R 2900 has a top swing speed of 5 rpm. Liebherr says it can fill 143-t (130-mt) trucks in seven passes and 99- to 110-t (90- to 100-mt) trucks in five passes. The excavator can also use a backhoe bucket instead of its face shovel attachment.

The R 2900 gets its motivation from a 1,086-horsepower (810-kilowatt) Cummins QSK38 engine, which complies with emissions standards of up to Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V. Liebherr also offers the machine with an 1,139-HP (850-kW) electric motor, which not only cuts harmful exhaust emissions but also generates much less noise and, the manufacturer says, lowers maintenance costs.
