HAMM To Launch New HX-Series Pivot-Steered Tandem Rollers At bauma 2022

HAMM will launch a new HX series of pivot-steered tandem rollers at the 2022 bauma trade show that will replace its current DV+ series. The HX series includes the 7.7-ton HX 70i and 9.9-t HX 90i models. (Photo courtesy of Wirtgen Group.)

Wirtgen Group recently announced that its HAMM equipment brand will showcase a new HX series of pivot-steered tandem rollers designed for high-quality compaction at the bauma 2022 trade show, taking place October 24 to 30 in Munich, Germany. HAMM will display the 7.7-ton (7-metric-ton) HX 70i and 9.9-t (9-mt) HX 90i models, available in split, non-split vibration, oscillation drum, and combination roller options, at the show.

    A Different Look

The 74.3-Horsepower (55.4-kilowatt) HX 70i and 100-HP (74.5-kW) HX 90i are powered by Tier 4 emissions-compliant engines. Each offers four steering modes and comes with newly designed lights, sheet-metal brackets, and a new in-cab camera system with monitors that gives operators improved visibility to the rear. Operator visibility to the drums is enhanced by a window in the cab floor.

HAMM says the machines’ built-in automatic reversing functionality quickly but smoothly brakes and accelerates the rollers. Both models also include an electrically adjustable seat that automatically pivots in the direction of travel when reversing, a feature that HAMM says is unique to the market. HAMM is also making new line and disc spreaders available for the HX series that provide quick-coupling installation and dismantling, work speed-dependent regulated spreading rates, a rearview camera, and more.

The HX series’ Smart Compact automatic compaction assistant can activate the compactor’s ECO mode when an asphalt layer is nearly compacted to cut engine speed by up to 20%, lowering fuel consumption by as much as 15%. (Photo courtesy of Wirtgen Group.)

    Smarter Compaction

The HX series includes an option to add a new Smart Compact automatic compaction assistant that’s well-suited for less experienced operators. The system is designed to enhance compaction and surface quality, and is operated using a separate display. After the operator enters a base, binder, or asphalt surface course to be compacted, Smart Compact automatically determines whether to compact with vibration and big or small amplitude, with oscillation, or statically, HAMM says.

Smart Compact also includes a built-in weather station to assess the impact of air temperature and wind on asphalt cooling behavior to decide the proper setting for each drum. HAMM says it’s the first manufacturer to automate the individual setting of each drum. Smart Compact also detects when an asphalt layer is nearly completely compacted, at which time it automatically cancels dynamic compaction and places the roller in ECO mode to reduce engine speed by up to 20% and consume as much as 15% less fuel.
