Manitowoc Readies 5 Potain Cranes For bauma 2022, Including MDT 489 Topless Tower Crane
Attendees of the upcoming bauma 2022 trade show will have the opportunity to view five cranes from Manitowoc’s Potain brand, including the MDT 489. Launched last year, the topless crane will make its public debut at the show, which occurs October 24 to 30 in Munich, Germany. The MDT 489 is available in 22- and 27.6-ton (20- and 25-metric-ton) M20 and M25 versions. Both can work with up to 262.5 feet (80 meters) of jib, and both are designed for use in construction and infrastructure projects, particularly those requiring installation of large, prefabricated components, as well as heavy-load handling at shipyards and mines.
The MDT 489
Manitowoc says the MDT 489’s powerful lift capacity allows it take on large construction projects, while its compact configuration lets it tackle lifting tasks on tight, congested jobsites. The crane’s compact design also makes it quick and easy to transport, assemble, and disassemble. Other than the slewing mechanism, all components are transportable in standard-sized shipping containers. Just nine are needed to transport the upper section, which is five fewer than a typical crane of comparable size, thus reducing transport costs and complexity, Manitowoc says. The manufacturer further says that assembling the entire jib and 164-ft (50-m) mast takes two days or less.
The MDT 489 includes a new high-performance 110HPL hoisting winch and Manitowoc’s Crane Control System (CSS), which Manitowoc says allow for crane setup in just 15 minutes. The system features a user-friendly interface and graphic display, plus ergonomic controls and a jog dial for easy navigation and data input. The included Potain Cab-In operator lift has a lifting speed of up to 78.7 ft (24 m) per minute and a load capacity of 441 pounds (200 kilograms).
There’s Even More
Also at bauma 2022, Potain will display the 6.6-t (6-mt) Igo T99, a telescoping self-erecting crane launched last year that provides 157.5 ft (48 m) of reach and 126.3 ft (38.5 m) of height under hook. The 2.4-t (2.2-mt) Potain Hup M 28-22 will also make an appearance; Manitowoc says it’s the market’s most compact self-erecting crane with a 92-ft (28-m) jib and working heights ranging from 62.3 to 101.7 ft. (19 to 31 m). Finally, Potain will have on hand a new luffing jib crane and a new topless crane, although details for both have yet to be released.
