Hamm has announced plans to launch its new flagship HX series of pivot-steered rollers for asphalt compaction next month. Replacing Hamm’s DV+ series, the HX series’ official launch will be at the Bauma 2022 construction trade show in Munich, Germany, from October 24th to 30th.

The new HX 70i is a 7.7-ton (7-metric-ton) model. Its HX 90i counterpart is a roller in the 9.9-t (9-mt) class. Both are available in tandem smooth drum and combination configurations. The two models meet EPA Tier 4 and EU Stage V emissions standards and provide high output and excellent compaction in curves, their manufacturer says.

The two HX rollers also support Hamm’s Smart Compact digital compaction assistant option, which has some new features.

Automatic Seat & Travel Direction Reversal

The new Hamm HX 70i is a 74.3-horsepower (55.4-kilowatt) roller with a weight of 15,432 pounds (7,000 kilograms). The HX 90i weighs in at 19,842 lbs (9,000 kg) and has a 100-HP (74.5 kW) engine.

Both utilize split vibration and oscillation drums to avoid cracks and bulges in the surface. An automatic reversing feature quickly but smoothly stops and starts the rollers’ motion. A unique HX-series feature automatically turns the operator’s seat to face the direction of travel.

HX-series roller compactors have a very large turning angle and a substantial track offset, as well as four steering modes. Hamm has improved the operator’s visibility to the left of the machines. The view to the rear is also better in HX rollers owing to new cameras and waterproof, IP66-rated displays.

Hamm also offers extras for the HX series including new spreaders with tarpaulins. A planned update will separate the water and additive tanks for more precise application and reduced water usage.

    Smart Compact

Hamm’s Smart Compact digital assistant option can be run on smartphones and tablets as well as computers. Its very simple operation and app interface appeals to current and new operators of roller compactors, according to the company.

Depending on the type of surface to be compacted (base, binder, or asphalt surface course), and its temperature or rigidity, Smart Compact sets the amplitude of the vibration, if any, and the oscillation of the drums, if any. The digital assistant adjusts the two drums’ settings separately, which is another first in the industry, Hamm says.

Smart Compact now considers local weather conditions in its calculations, including ambient temperature and wind. When the compacted layer is almost finished, the software switches the rollers to static compaction mode and the engine to ECO mode, saving up to 15% on fuel.
