Vermeer Redesigns HG4000 Horizontal Grinder With Upgraded Feed Roller, Remote Control
Vermeer's redesigned HG4000 is a next-generation, horizontal grinder for wood waste recycling and mulch production. The compact yet high-capacity HG4000 has a feed opening of 42 by 60 inches (1,067 by 1,524 millimeters) and a feed table capacity of 4.6 cubic yards (3.5 cubic meters). It’s powered by a Tier 4 Final- and Stage V-compliant Cat diesel engine.
“It’s a great unit for tree care professionals looking to minimize dump fees on bulkier material and turn waste into a useful end product,” says Vermeer Product Manager for Environmental Equipment Jeff Bradley. “It’s also a productive machine for small to midsize mulch producers with limited space for the material. The size of the HG4000 also makes it efficient to transport in congested urban environments, making it an ideal machine for small land-clearing operations. And while this horizontal is smaller than other machines in the Vermeer grinder product line, it still can handle a variety of materials ranging from loose, bulky materials like leaves, branches, and yard clipping to hardwoods, pallets, and logs.”
Powerful Infeed System
The HG4000 grinder uses Vermeer’s Series III duplex drum with reversible hammers and tips. Its updated feed roller has aggressive teeth and applies powerful down pressure to maintain control over the material inside the double-strength, low sidewalls. The feed system automatically adjusts the engine speed to the predicted demands of the load. Its feed roller drive planetary is fully enclosed for protection and to keep trees, brush, and pallets from catching on the way in.
The Vermeer Damage Defense system can detect some metal contaminants prior to grinding to avoid contact with the hammermill. After grinding, an optional cross band magnet and magnetic head pulley can handle post-processing removal of ferrous metal fragments. Vermeer redesigned the anvil-mount structure to make it easier to replace the hard wear edge.
Remote Operation
The HG4000 comes with a full-function, wireless remote which can operate the grinder from up to 300 feet (91.4 meters) away. “With the remote, operators can adjust infeed settings, engine speed droop, conveyor height, and more, which means maximum time grinding throughout the day,” says Bradley.
The 536-horsepower (400-kilowatt) Cat C13B engine that powers the HG4000 is supported by a vast network of parts and service locations. The engine does not need to be moved in order to adjust the drive belt tension. During operation, the grinder has a sound level of 112 decibels.
Practical Matters
The HG4000 has a transport width of 8.2 ft (2.5 m) and a height of 13 ft (4 m). When mounted on a fifth-wheel trailer, the grinder is 32 ft (9.7 m) long and weighs 52,910 pounds (24,000 kilograms). On a pintle hitch trailer, its length is 37 ft (11.3 m) and its overall weight is 55,155 lbs (25,000 kg). Vermeer gave the HG4000 various features to make service and maintenance easier, including large hinged side shields for easy access and a hoist with power rotation for changing screens. Its options list includes an onboard air compressor.
