Volvo Introduces EC300E Straight Boom Demolition Excavator
Volvo Construction Equipment launched its new 30-ton (27-metric ton)-class EC300E Straight Boom demolition excavator at the National Demolition Association (NDA) show held in Phoenix, Arizona, February 22nd to 25th, 2023. The manufacturer also introduced its innovative Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom solution, which lets Volvo’s high-reach demolition models perform unloading and load-out of machine components such as cradles and booms to obviate the need for a separate crane on the work site.
“Being able to offer customers another size of straight-boom excavator is exciting, and launching at the NDA show felt ideal,” says Tony den Hoed, key account director, demolition equipment at Volvo CE. “The demolition segment is ever-changing, and we are proud to keep up with it by offering products and solutions that will keep operators safe and productive.”
The Volvo EC300E Straight Boom
The new EC300E Straight Boom is a smaller counterpart to Volvo’s EC380E Straight Boom demolition excavator. It has greater height and reach than the standard EC300E with a long, 23-foot (7-meter) straight boom instead of a boom and stick. The straight boom comes with X1 and X3 auxiliary piping, a quick-fit and oil drain line, and water lines for the machine’s dust suppression system. The user can activate dust suppression manually or let it automatically spray when the attachment is working.
The new demolition version of the EC300E also differs from the standard model with customary guards and a reinforced, plate-steel frame with bolt-head protection. It’s armored against debris with features such as a slew ring cover, boom and bucket cylinder protection, a full track guard, a heavy-duty undercover, and a belly cover.
The Volvo Care Cab on the demo excavator protects itself and its operator from overhead debris with a frame-mounted falling objects guard and high-impact roof and front glass made from EN356-standard P5A. The cab is also fortified with a side impact protection structure and heavy-duty side doors with shutters and screens. Standard features include washers and wipers on the windshield and roof, plus a dust-clearing, reversible cooling fan.
Specifications
The EC300E Straight Boom has an advertised operating weight of 77,792 pounds (35,286 kilograms), subject to configuration, and supports tools weighting up to 6,834 lbs (3,100 kg). The machine can attain a maximum pin reach of 33.17 ft (10.1 m) and a max pin height of 37.75 ft (11.5 m). The EC300E can exert up to 40,241 pounds-force (179 kilonewtons) of breakout force and up to 32,372 lbf (144 kN) of tear-out force.
The Euro Stage V-compliant diesel engine at the heart of the EC300E produces 253 gross horsepower (189 kilowatts) with a torque curve that peaks at a low 1,400 rpm. The superstructure of the machine has a tailswing radius of 10.25 ft (3.12 m).
New Lifting Mode
Volvo’s Lifting Mode for Multi Demolition Boom solution can be installed at the factory on the company’s EC380E HR, EC480E HR and EC750E HR high-reach excavators. It includes a certified lifting accessory for the lower boom pin and software for the controlled lifting of objects and equipment. When Lifting Mode is engaged, the software activates a rotating beacon atop the cab and takes control of the engine speed and hydraulic pressure.
The new feature allows a high-reach Volvo demolition excavator to unload its own boom and cradle upon arrival to the jobsite.
“Total cost of ownership is reduced by eliminating the need for a mobile crane or second excavator, and flexibility is increased thanks to the time savings,” den Hoed says. “Emissions are also reduced due to fewer vehicles being on-site.”
