Komatsu’s PC210LCE Electric Excavator Cuts Carbon & Operating Costs

Electric-powered equipment is all the rage these days, and it’s easy to see why. Electrification offers multiple benefits, both for the environment and for the companies that employ electric machines, in the form of lower operation and maintenance costs. Electric machines don’t need fuel and have fewer components that require routine service. In addition, they can operate in places and at times of the day when diesel-powered machines can’t.

    More Electric, Less Carbon

Recognizing these benefits, Komatsu has been working to introduce more electric equipment to its lineup. The manufacturer’s PC210LCE electric excavator, coming soon to North America, was one of the stars at the Komatsu booth at last month’s ConExpo-Con/Agg trade show in Las Vegas. The 20-ton (18-metric-ton) electric excavator was developed as a high-performance machine with a low carbon footprint for the construction industry and made its public debut at bauma last fall in Germany. The excavator is part of Komatsu’s goal of cutting carbon emissions in half by 2030 and achieving complete carbon neutrality by 2050.

    A Full Day’s Work

The zero-emissions electric excavator is designed to reduce operator fatigue with lower noise levels and zero engine vibrations and is well-suited to work in urban and indoor jobsites. The PC210LCE is powered by a lithium-ion battery with a capacity of 451 kilowatt-hours and is capable of up to eight hours of operation per charge. The PC210LCE on display at ConExpo was configured with Komatsu’s Smart Construction Retrofit, a guidance kit that provides access to 2D and 3D machine control and payload data that assists with drive accuracy, control load volumes, and other ways to improve operations.
