New Cat R2900 XE Diesel Electric Underground Wheel Loader Delivers Big Productivity Gains

Caterpillar's newly introduced Cat R2900 XE is its first diesel-electric underground load-haul-dump (LHD) loader. The underground mining machine is built on the platform of the Cat R2900G but provides 35% better breakout force thanks to an optimized lift arm and component geometry and load-sensing hydraulics. The machine also has 52% quicker acceleration and enhanced machine response, a 7% higher speed on grade, a larger 20.4-ton (18.5-tonne) payload, and a more than 31% increase in fuel efficiency. Overall, Cat says the R2900 XE provides 20% improved productivity over the R2900G. Another positive: Owners can expect lower cost-per-ton operation due to the machine’s durable design, longer-lasting components, improved maintenance, and other factors.

Improvements Abound

The R2900 XE’s redesigned buckets are available in four sizes ranging in capacity from 9.7 to 12 cubic yards (7.4 to 9.2 cubic meters). Ground engaging tools (GET) include Modular Weld-on, Bolt-on Half Arrow, and Durilock mechanically attached shrouds. Various weld-on or mechanically attached heel shrouds, wear plates, and bars are also available to bolster bucket protection. The loader’s Cat C15 engine is rated for 449 horsepower (335 kilowatts) and is available with various emission reduction and aftertreatment options, including a Tier 4 Final configuration with diesel particulate filter (DPF). Cat says lower engine rpm result in less fuel burn, heat, noise, vibrations, and exhaust emissions but an increase in power and productivity.

The machine’s high-efficiency switch reluctance electric drive system provides continuously variable speed control for increased power and cycle times. Operators can expect smoother directional changes, automatic retarding controls that maintain speed of grade, a safety-enhancing anti-rollback feature, and no coasting in neutral. A new axle design, larger wheel bearings, increased brake sizing, and other improvements and features make the loader stronger and extend its useful life. Cat says the R2900 XE also offers safer tire and rim changes, reduced tire spin in underfoot conditions, and a reduction in consumable costs.

Comfort & Productivity

The R2900 XE’s next-generation enclosed cab is based on that of the R1700. To enhance operator comfort and safety, it incorporates features like a temperature-controlled air circulation system, a rollover protection system/falling object protective system (ROPS/FOPS) that isolates the operator from vibration, two emergency exits, and multiple cameras that enhance visibility around the loader. Machine control features include a 2-pedal design with improved spacing and positioning for better foot control. An optional ride control system enhances cycle times and load retention when working in rough terrain and automatically dampens bucket forces and stabilizes the loader to reduce fore and aft pitching motion.

The R2900 XE is prepped at the factory to incorporate technologies from Cat’s MineStar suite. Depending on their needs, mining operations can choose such options as command for underground, which enables remote control operation, and fleet for underground, which tracks, records, and provides real-time access to cycle time, payload, machine position, and other data. New Autodig technology is also available to automate key tasks in the digging cycle.
