Caterpillar’s New, Efficient 995 Large Wheel Loader Moves 60 Tons Per Pass
Caterpillar has announced its new 995 wheel loader, a successor to the 994K. The 995 is the same size as the 994K but offers more payload capacity and performance while using up to 13% less fuel. With a payload rated at up to 60 tons (54.4 metric tons), the new 995 can fill Cat 785, 789, and 793 mining trucks in one fewer pass. The loader has a 540,555-pound (245,192-kilogram) operating weight in its standard-lift configuration.
Building On The 994K’s Success
Caterpillar says the new 995 is up to 19% more efficient and productive than the 994K and provides 6% more hydraulic force. The loader’s Enhanced Eco Mode can improve its fuel efficiency by another 8% over its throttle lock mode. The manufacturer redesigned the wheel loader’s front linkage casting and enlarged its bearings, pins, and weld size for longer service life.
The Cat 995 can use the same buckets as the 994K, starting at 22.3 cubic yards (17.2 cubic meters) of capacity, as well as newer, larger units of up to 57 cu yds (43.6 cu m). The spill-resistant new buckets feature extended floors and fill factors of up to 115%. A Payload Overload Prevention option takes bucket weight into consideration and will stop or slow the lift arms if the combined load is too heavy.
Facilitating The Operator
Caterpillar says the 995’s redesigned, quiet cabin has 50% more legroom and provides easy, safe entry and exit. It boasts 25% more glass surface area than the 994K—most apparent in its taller windshield—and 64% greater sweep area for its window wipers. Cat installed several features and systems designed to reduce operator fatigue and inspire user confidence, such as automatic temperature control and new speed-sensing, electrohydraulic steering with force feedback.
A pair of 10-inch (254-millimeter) LED monitors display machine information or the operator’s manual as needed. An 8-in. (203-mm) supplementary screen shows the video feed from the standard rearview camera. An optional multi-view camera system offers 270 degrees of visibility with a rear-facing object detection system.
Cat’s optional Operator Coaching feature tracks 21 types of user techniques and reports practices detrimental to productivity, efficiency, and component service life. Training videos highlight right and wrong ways of performing common tasks, such as how to use the loader’s kickout feature, dump from a lower height, avoid overuse of the impeller clutch, reduce tire rotation the correct way, avoid unracking while digging, and enter the pile with the bucket held level.
Power & Assistive Technologies
The Cat 3516E diesel engine powering the 995 wheel loader is available with EPA Tier 4 Final and EU Stage V emissions controls, as well as a Tier 1 equivalent format for more loosely regulated markets. The engine generates 1,739 horsepower (1,297 kilowatts) of net power. Its 8,549 pounds-foot (11,591 newton-meters) of torque—a remarkable 39% increase—improves digging and acceleration performance. The big Cat uses a planetary power shift transmission and can reach a top forward speed of 15.2 mph (24.5 km/h) and a top reverse speed of 16.8 mph (27 km/h).
A tip-up prevention system comes standard, keeping the rear tires generally planted on the ground when applying full breakout force to a load. The 995 is compatible with Cat MineStar technology solutions such as Health, Guide, and Terrain.
The loader also supports new Autodig options, which address more difficult parts of the digging cycle for better productivity and less tire wear. The Tire Slip Prevention component manages rimpull, reducing it before the tires are set and increasing it when it detects downward force. The Auto Set Tires feature automatically lifts against the pile to improve traction and discourage premature racking. Finally, Lift Stall Prevention reduces the time the 995 spends in the pile by adjusting rimpull and preventing hydraulic stall when lifting through the face.
Easy Maintenance
Cat made maintenance on the 995 easier with a redesigned pump bay with access to filters, discharge screens, and diagnostic ports. A 500-hour engine oil change interval and extended air filter life contribute to greater uptime. The manufacturer also eliminated many steering tubes and hoses to reduce potential leak points.
The user can access detailed sensor information and machine data by connecting to the 995’s standard Vital Information Management System (VIMS). Also standard is support for Cat Product Link remote access through the VisionLink interface.
